Besides switching brake pads, and an oil filter, nothing.
This car belonged to my father.
He drove the car to approximately
150 000 km's. He bought a newer vehicle in 1997, so he gave me the Lincoln.
I drove this car all the time. The only problem I ever had with this gem was the brake shoes. After a very easy, inexpensive repair, this car lasted me 100 000 km's with no major trouble at all.
This car was dripping with luxury.
The seats were amazing. The sheer roominess of the vehicle was incredible.
The sound system (which was stock) was also pristine.
This car floated along the highway as if riding on a cushion of air. The mileage on the highway was also decent.
The only that cost me money was the
in-town driving. The stop and go style of driving, added to the gross weight of the old girl, made the fuel economy a little steep. But worth every cent.
I added a K&N air filter, as well as a free-flowing full exhaust. Most Lincoln owners might cringe at this modification, because it made the noise of my vehicle somewhat "mean" and throaty (which I just loved) but it made a tremendous difference in power. The car felt like it had been choked prior, and now, could breath, thus running stronger.
I found this car to be very fast with acceleration.
However, I test drove a newer 1988 model, and it felt totally different than the 1986 model. The acceleration wasn't anything to what the 86 model had.
I would love to find myself another low-mileage 1986 Lincoln Towncar, and buy this baby once again.
A truly wonderful work of art. Later years I find aren't the same, and any year earlier just isn't the same either.
If you want the best Lincoln Towncar, then get yourself an 86 model.
You won't be disappointed.
I just bought 1 1986 Lincoln Town Car with 107,000 km's on it from a very nice Grama who bought a new Lincoln. She says that her new Lincoln doesn't ride as nice as her new one. I'm just enjoying the ride!!!
I've borrowed my grandfather's for the summer and I must agree with the above review. After humping & bumping around in a 95 Jeep Cherokee Sport, the transition to the 86 Town Car was like culture shock. For the first few weeks I refused to drive it home from the bars, fearing I might fall asleep at the wheel; the ride and the interior are really that comfortable. The cabin is also quiet enough for you to hear your own heart beat if you so desire - pretty impressive soundproofing, but I personally found that to be a bit, eh, isolating. The radio takes care of that. I hope I don't have to hand this car back over anytime soon. It may be the last one I'll ever drive.
302 5.0L EFI plus Lincoln equal sheer luxurious thrills!
I can honestly say that my 1986 Lincoln Town car has indeed made my heart skip a few beats.
The epitome of 80's style, this vehicle is pure indulgence. With enough room for anybody to kick back and stretch their legs, - Be it up front or in the back seat - and enjoy the feeling of real leather. Feel free to experience this automobile, I recommend it to those that love style, power, and luxury.
P.S. Mine has 20's, dual flow-master exhaust, silver skin and can be heard rolling hard with an awesome sound system... Quiet ride indeed!
I have a 1986 Black Lincoln Town Car.
Only 93,000 miles on it.
Runs like a dream.
Just had it repainted and detailed.
Unfortunately the transmission went so I had to get it rebuilt. Other than that the car is in excellent running condition. It was my dad's and I'm taking it to school with me. Can't wait to show up in that tank. It's gonna turn a few heads.
The 1986 Lincoln Towncar would turn the most biased perception of a vehicle into a vast perception. The extreme level of both luxury and performance cannot be matched by virtually any vehicle of the past, present, or future.
I have owned a 1986 Towncar since 2001 and I have become the first pizza delivery driver in history to deliver food in such a posh vehicle. Good luck finding a comparable car.
P.S. I own it.
Wonderful car!!! My 86 just tripped 200,000 and is running strong! no problems as of yet If it blew today I would spend the cash to fix her!
I have an 1984 Lincoln Town car two tone blue, dark blue leather interior. It has 292000 km. It runs like a dream it, drives like a dream. It has tons of room, lots of power, decent highway mileage. Great car, no complaints would buy another in a second.
I am the proud owner of a 1988 Licoln Towncar, Its Nice that is for sure, I'm at 169,000 miles and still running. Engine is strong. Sure is a land Yacht. SMOOTH.
I got this car in 2000 I'm up to 95000 miles and its running like a champ. I have an awsome sound system with 4 12" subs and 2 10" subs on the back panel. I was thinking about working the motor a little bit when I get out of college.
I picked up an 1986 Lincoln Town Car at a auction here in what they call the "Dead Row" it had a almost perfect body except for two small dents the size of a dime. The interior was great, but the dash has two cracks in it and I bought another interior door panel for $10, all this car needed was a starter and tires, (they had dry-rotted from sitting so long). My total investment in this automobile with 115,000 miles on it is $440.00. Hope that she lasts a long time, I have already put 25.000 miles on it.
I am the proud owner of a 1986 Signature Series Town Car. I am her one and only owner. Maintenance kept up to date and repairs have been minimal. She has 121,000 miles. Plan to have complete paint and detail redone. I LOVE this car and plan to keep her to my dying day. My son hopes I will Will it to him:)
I have had my 86 towncar for 10 months now and it has taught me a lot about cars, its powerfull, cheap to fix, and extremely reliable, I picked it up from a friend for 600 bucks, since then I have put in a new radiator (gotta love phoenix) new tires, brake lines, and powersteering lines. all of these problems and the car never stopped once, I would recommend this car for everyone, I learned to drive in it and now I can drive anything, also the car does great in the desert hills.
Found the site interesting and have a question about gas mileage.
I currently own a 1986 Town Car Signature Series, got around 100,000 miles on it. No dents, no rust, no anything. Looks like a brand new car and I live it most the time. Except for then the exhaust got ripped off (poor road conditions in New York City) and the fuel filter apparently clogged up and made the car stall on a major road (AAA helped). Otherwise a very nice car, I too can only recommend it to anyone.
Funny actually that I'm selling it but I just got me a 1999 Continental which is just as amazing but sportier and FWD which, in the winter, I will love in Michigan.
(anyone interested in the Town Car, e-mail me for pictures and more info at gba476@yahoo.com)
I just got a 1986 Lincoln Town car with 76,000 miles for $500 at an auction in town. It has sat for 5 - 10 yrs and it looks GREAT! I'm just wondering what "might" need done to it to get her going again?
