1986 Lincoln Town Car Signature review from North America

"If you want to feel as if you are on a Boeing on land buy one of these"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Replaced water pump at 90000 miles (it was 18 years old after all) with one with lifetime warranty for just $32.00. Need to check out the brake make a grinding sound when it come to a halt. Fuel gauge shows emty tank always. Speedometer cable make a jolly noise. AC needs recharging and replacement of evaporator core and O-rings and to be fixed for minor leaks, otherwise compressor and clutch work, cheaper to retrofit and fill with new coolant. Power windows are a pain as the actual glides/guides are difficult to find. Replaced heater core myself with a new for $18.00. In all I have spent less than a hundred dollars on replacement parts. Valve cover gasket leaks on passenger side, an inexpensive replacement, maybe $9.00.

General comments?

This car is inspite of its few minor problems for its age has one of the most trouble free engine and transmissions I have seen. The interior is fabric, so I feel it is very durable and maintainece free, carpeting is plush, perhaps the roomiest car I ever sat in. 21 mpg when crusing on highway at any speed from 55 to 75 mph. Gas mileage drops drastically outside this range. 15 -17 mpg in city which is great considering the size of the car and its motor. Great accelration from 0-45 mph, no wonder they call it the Town Car. I love the radio, you feel as if you are in an amphitheater with all the clarites of the finer frequencies. I wish I could keep it forever, hate to see it being sold as I don't have room for the third new car. Every mile I put on this car was a "WORTHWHILE MILE". I know if I were to keep it and look after it, it will go 300K miles.
