Due to the excessive weight of this beast, it eats brakes.
Vinyl Roof was going when I bought it and continues to do so, however I've done my best to keep it going long enough so that none of the metal underneath rusts, and it seems that I've succeeded. (Thank you Clear RTV..lol)
If you want a fast, superb handling vehicle, this car is not for you.
However, if you've always wanted a car that's as comfortable as a suit at the Ritz, rides like a cloud, and draws smiles from everyone who sees it, then I'd definitly reccomend buying a 79 Lincoln Town Car. My favorite parts of this vehicle are the luxiourious seats and the incredibly spatious interior. I've never been in a car so comfortable. Sure it gets 10mpg, but who cares! One does not buy a car like this and worry about the fuel economy, its more of a summer Saturday Night cruiser vehicle anyways.
For those who have never driven a car this big before, please realize that the power steering may surprise you, (it can be steered with one finger), and also that it takes awhile to stop a freight train like this.
Everywhere you go with a 20-Foot Lincoln, people are bound to turn their heads, especially the over 70 crowd.
Don't get me wrong, the 400M is plenty powerful for highway cruising, it just takes awhile to get there. The cruise control is silky smooth, and the C6 Ford auto that this car comes with is bulletproof, just keep up with the fluid changes and it should give you years of trouble free shifting.
Overall, this car has been very reliable and parts for it are dirt cheap anyways. Virtually everything mechanical is available at your local NAPA or an equivilant store.
What are you talking about? Everyone likes to see older cars!
I bought a 79 Continental in Feb 2005. Loved the ride, the feel and the classic look. It wasn't in front of the house more than a week before a couple guys knocked on the door asking if I'd consider selling it. This one has no vinyl roof and has plain cloth bench seats and no side moldings so it is a very basic model. But she rides nice. The brakes were nearly gone on front so I put new calipers and rotors on. Unlike an earlier post that complains about distance to stop this car, with the new brakes, she'll send you through the windshield with just light touch to the pedal. I loved driving this car so much, I went and got a 79 Town Car and a 79 Continental Collector Series as well. The first one has about 110K miles, the Town Car with the leather interior and automatic headlights, etc has less than 70K and the Collector with less than 60K miles. A lot of cars for a single guy (also have a 66 Charger and a large 800lb motorcycle) but no matter what I drive, I can find it in the parking lot from a distance!!!
I also drive a 79 Lincoln Town Car. It's my second one. I sold my first one, and missed it so much I replaced it with another one. I see lots of looks and smiles, and lots of compliments, even from high school kids in their suped up Honda's. There's no car I'd rather drive. If I had a choice of another car, it would be the 79 Mark V. The Town Car seats six comfortably. I use it for pleasure, and for carting the family around, which is the wife and I, and 3 kids. Plenty of room for all. The wife thinks it is cool, with the lights/mirrors in the visors for her make-up, and the plush leather seats are very comfortable. The 400M gets me 12MPG, which is what some SUV's get, so I don't really mind. It's worth the feeling I get when I'm behind the wheel.
