"I will never buy a Ford product again."

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Air Suspension will not lower itself unless I manually empty the air out of the bags myself.

CHECK ENGINE light will not go out and stay out, even after I reset the computer.

Water Pump.

Fuel Pump.

Heater Core.

EGR Valve (the entire EGR system)

Starter.

Lifters.

General comments?

I hate this car. I have had it only a month and I totally hate it. It has been nothing, but problems. The engine runs very well, with great performance. The car is also rides smooth and is very comfortable. However, this car is nothing, but problems! I have had it only a month and I have had so many problems with it. When I first got it, it was great. Then as soon as that stupid CHECK ENGINE light came on, everything went downhill from there. I really hate this car and I have never had a Ford that was like this before. I had a 92 De Ville before this car which ran so good, got better gas mileage, and had a smoother ride. Unfortunately, an 80 year old man in a Chevy Caprice ran a red light doing 40mph and totalled my Caddy. I will never buy another Ford product again after what I have gone through with this Town Car. But hey, the car sure does look nice. I just wish it ran right. I baby all my cars to death and this car is truly a rip-off.

Ha this is interesting... I have a '92 Deville and I nearly traded it in on a '94 Town Car. But I'm glad I didn't.

Sorry to hear, do you know the previous owner, did he/she take care of the car. You have a really neglected car, I see these cars with over 300K miles on them never heard of lifter repairs on these engines too early for a starter, also too early for a water pump my 92 Grand Marquis has almost 130K on the orginal fuel pump with southwest desert heat beating down on it all its life don't blame the manufacturer for the previous owners neglect or perhaps your own.

I have never neglected this car. I had rebuilt cars for the past 6 years now (nine cars in total) and this one is a disgrace. The original owner insisted that he kept everything up to date on it, and even fixed a problem if one should have arose. I never beat any of my cars or any cars I have had. I don't rev the engine, race the car or anything like that. I keep all my cars in tip top shape and every time I repair something on this car, something else goes wrong. I had a 1993 Ford Crown Victoria and I never had problems like this ever. That had 185,000 miles on it. Yeah, it had its normal wear and tear, but not like this Town Car. Believe me, I would never neglect my cars. I change the oil every 3000 miles, change the anti-freeze once a year, change the brake fluid once and year and flush the transmission once a year. I also put GOOD fuel system treatment in all my cars once a month and clean out any excess carbon out of the engine every 6 months.

Since when did overhead cam engines have lifters?

This car does not have its typical SOHC engine. The engine in it is a DOHC Cobra V8. The gentleman who had the car before runs the trucking for Amaroso rolls and decided that he wanted a Cobra motor in his land yaht.

Any time you take a car away from its factory equipment, you will run the risk of creating problems. I have had very good luck out of these cars. It sound to me that your town car was raced and abused.

I have had these experiences in my family and self.

1995 Town Car Signature Spinnaker (White) 110,000-no problem at all, wrecked at 110K (Got New)

1995 Ford Crown Victoria 240,000-miles, still on road today, uses lots of oil, but one rear brake caliper has went bad and that is it since new (Got in 1997 with 22K-miles)

1995 Town Car Signature (Blue) 319,000 miles, Transmission bad at 299,000-miles, ABS pump bad at 310,000-miles, Blend door actuator bad at 310,000-miles, totaled in accident at 319,998 miles. 90% of these miles are NYC miles. The car was ran as a private taxi. (Got new)

1995 Town Car Signature, Power steering pump bad at 2,000-miles, Brake lines rusted in two by 2004. ABS pump motor acting up sometimes, #2 piston went bad at 123,000-miles-12/10/2005. This car sat in my mothers estate for 4-years with out being driven, I suspect this is why the engine failed at such a low mileage. (mother bought new)

My mechanic, a Retired in 2004 Ford Mechanic-Lincoln, Mercury, Ford, dealership, head mechanic told me today that he has only seen two of these engines go bad from 1991 to today. Mine and one other engine that was full of oil sludge.

He says that the 4.6 Ford engine along with the Town Car, Grand Marquis, and Crown Victoria are very durable and high quality cars.

The reviewer bought a 10-year-old car with 76,000 miles on it, and is outraged that it needed some maintenance to negate the previous owner's neglect? Come on, let's get real. If you'd bought a brand new Town Car, then there might be some justification for this outrage, but not on a 10-year old car.

I have owned a number of used Lincoln Town Cars, and have found the engines extremely reliable. The Lincoln 4.6 is a standard DOHC and does not have lifters. I fail to understand placing a non standard engine into a Lincoln.

I had 1.2 million miles on a 90, and have over 300,000 on a 93.

Surely the simple solution would be to take the car to your local Lincoln dealer and have them complete a computerized diagnostic and that will list the site of each problem. For less than $100 you have the answer to all of the problems.

The rear air suspension could be a simple as a faulty sensor which is attached to the outside rear of the passenger compartment. Listen for the suspension compressor located in the front left of the engine compartment, does it come on and stay on? Is the suspension switch on or faulty? You should not let the air bags down.

Repairs on the Lincoln are generally very straight forward. I am not a mechanic and can fix most things myself when I know exactly what I am looking for and with the help of a friendly mechanic.

I own a 95 town car. Sometimes it will not start. The engine will turn, but it just will not start. I can go away and come back later and it will start right away. It has never failed to start after sitting for a period of time. I can find nothing cyclic about the problem. It is random. Has any one else experienced this problem? I and several mechanics in my area are at a lose.

I have experienced the same problem with my 95, ON A HOT RESTART. As soon as the car cooled it started right up. I changed the EGR valve that worked for a while then it started again. On a hot restart. I tried something on a friends recommendation AND IT WORKED okay, under the hood, there is a box on the drivers side, I opened it and one of the power fuses (they are very large fuses) was burning hot For 4 dollars I changed it and guess what NEVER HAPPENED AGAIN 4 years now. I have had that car towed at least 6 times. Imagine for 4 dollars problem fixed, for my 95 at least. GOOD LUCK!!!

OMG, 1.2 million miles, wow hard to believe, but OK.. lol well I disagree with the main reviewer, these are great cars and those engines do not have lifters, I think your full of horse menure.

Well that's too bad that you had so many problems, but my 95 executive with 222,222 miles is doing just fine, even with the check engine light on because of the EGR valve. Anyway, I'm sad to hear that you will Never get another Ford again, but hey, "to each his own"!

Yeah, I'm somewhat dumbfounded too.

Reviewer has a used TC with a DOHC engine that the original owner had swapped into it? How in the world can you blame the car when it was pieced apart and gerry-rigged by the previous owner.

While only reading the first comment, and ignoring the rest, I must say that I own a 94 towncar, and it is one of the nicest cars that I own. You must have just gotten a bad one, they are truly superior cars.

Thanks a lot for the story because I was on my way to pick up my 93 Towncar Signature that I won off eBay. Now that I heard the story I don't want another Lincoln Towncar. I've had 12 of them and they all gave me trouble except for my 2003.
