1997 Mazda 323 Astina (323F) review from Australia and New Zealand
"Good looking, quick and fairly practical hatch"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Nothing mechanical so far (owned 6 months), but drivers seat wearing around the side cushions
Bodywork has lot of paint chips and dents - New Zealand roads and drivers!
Knocking sound from underneath - source unknown.
General comments?
1.8 motor (used in MX5) puts out 92kW (122 bhp) and is fairly quick in smallish hatch.
Faster above 4000rpm, but OK around town
Handles well, but would benefit from lowered and stiffened suspension to reduce body roll
Smooth gearchange
Firm, but not harsh ride
Looks sexy, esp. in red with alloys
Enough space under bonnet for DIY maintenance
Interior a bit plasticky and gloomy - go for lighter colours / higher trim levels
Engine booms and vibrates below 2500 rpm - 2 litre V6 version is smoother.
