I maintained the car well and only used it for very short range (daily from home to office, only 2-3 km).
The engine was problem free and smooth. The only problem is after sales support. Mazda is not a big brand here, where the market is dominated by Toyota and Honda. The support then sometimes is inadequate.
Secondary market for Mazda sedan is very thin, so it was difficult when I tried to sell it in 2001.
In Indonesia, Mazda is a niche player and several times tried to penetrate the market with new models. The effort seems unsuccessful as some Korean brands finally exceeded its sales.
Your idea is partly wrong. Mazda actually is producing a mid range car, as you can see the quality is really good and the price is value for money. Usually it's not affordable for others to buy it, so it makes it not very popular.
For a certain models like the GTR and GTX, it has higher resale value for its engine advancement compare to others. Their BPT, BPD, B6T, KFZE and the Rotary engine (Only Mazda use this engine) is a marvelous masterpiece. Just ask enthusiast - surely they'll agree.
