1996 Mazda 626 LX 4 cylinder from North America

Summary:

Not a bargin, high cost of repairs

Faults:

I bought this Mazda 626 used at 121,000 for my 17yr old son. Only two days after purchase the transmission lost reverse gear.

We contacted the local Mazda dealer who informed us that the transmission needed replaced at a cost of $3500-$4200. The car isn`t even worth that much..

The forward gears in this car seem to work fine, and there is about 25% of reverse gear when first started in the morning, however, after the car is warmed up, there is no reverse gear at all. I thought maybe the bands on the reverse gear might need tightening, but the Mazda dealer stated that wasn`t the case and to bring in the car to have the transmission replaced.

I just can`t believe that it would cost this much to replace a transmission on any car.

I would never buy another car, new or used, from this manufacture again.

General Comments:

I have taken this Mazda 626 to three transmission repair shops and have been informed by all that it does need a transmission replacement.

The car just might have to sit as I refuse to pay that kind of money for a replacement transmission.

1996 Mazda 626 LX 2.0 Liter DOHC from North America

Summary:

To high maintenance for a family car

Faults:

This car has a lot of problem.

Hard shifting.

Always dies when I put in park or even neutral.

Over heats when I accelerate, but cools down when I slow down.

Belt pulley already makes noise like it wants to break.

General Comments:

This car is great for a family.

It's very roomy and drives pretty smooth.

I doubt I would ever buy one like it again.

The overheating problem seems like your fan clutch is out.

1996 Mazda 626 ES V6 2.5L engine from North America

Summary:

A nightmare! Stay away!

Faults:

After a month of using the car, the starter went dead. I had to pay $200 to a rebuilt one and get it fixed.

Had to perform an alignment 3 times in 3 months!

After 3 months the distributor died, and I had to pay $300 to get that fixed (from junk yard).

The car started over heating whenever I would drive it for more than 30 minutes.

The fuel pump finally went to hell so it's sitting in my driveway, taking up space.

General Comments:

The car is really fun to drive and handles well when it's working. However DO NOT buy one unless you have sufficient maintenance funds in the bank.

Acceleration is slow. This is extremely dangerous on expressways.

Being that this was my first car, it was a nightmare! This car left me stranded 3 times, and cost my parents A LOT of money to fix. If you do not like being stranded, I don't recommend it.

Last, but not least, when buying a car, do your research! Go to websites such as this one with user reviews because they help.

1996 Mazda 626 LX from North America

Summary:

Good little worker!

Faults:

The Check engine light has come on a couple times for no reason. Our mechanic recommended disconnecting the battery briefly to reset it, and it hasn't come back for almost a year.

General Comments:

This car has been a dream to drive. We've spent virtually no money on upkeep.

This car has decent road power and responsiveness, but you can forget about going over 40 on a long hill.

Not a sign of rust or wear on the body, either.

This car has taken us all over the country, and I'm totally happy with it.
