Since I bought the car it gave me
nothing, but problems. I changed the timing belt, alternator, 4 brakes, rotors, calipers. The electric light always goes on for no apparent reason.
Mazda has checked it out and charged me big bucks for doing nothing. I think most 6 cylinder cars can last you upto 350,000 km if you look after it, but it seems that the previous owner "just drove it" without maintaining it.
Mazda 626 is a good car if bought from under 100,000 km. It is a fast car, faster than Honda Civic Si. 0 to 60 mph in 7.7 seconds, 175 bhp. It is smooth. But check the car history before you buy it. I think the person who owned it before me just drove it to the ground without any maintenance. So I got the brunt of it and in 1 year have spent over $4000 Canadian. A lot. Not worth it.
I don't know what the heck happened to your car, but I have a '94 626 ES and I have only had a problem with the distributor going out.. that was a hefty repair, but since then the car has run like a dream.. I love my car!
My 1994 Mazda 626 ES is 85000 miles on the meter and still running too good. I agree to the first comment that the "Electrical Maintenance Light" glows for no reason, but I have made no effort to fix it till now as I know that it is a common problem with Mazda models like 626, Protege etc. Apart from that the car is luxurious and excellent.
I purchased my 626 ES 3 years ago with 93,000 miles on it. It broke down on a bridge (Fuel Gauge Didn't Work). Catalytic Converter went bad... dealer replaced it.
CAR RAN LIKE A NEW BABY until 160,000...
Transmission Bombed. Cost $2,000 to replace. See Ya Later Mazda.
Almost the same events happened to me with my Mazda 626 V6. The old owners barely gave any information of the history, but I bought it anyway. $1000 in damage repairs later.. I'm still finding things wrong. Like the electric lights.
My 1994 626es has generally been a good car. I like the way it drives, and runs, and the comfort of the seats. I bought it new. I maintain it well, but consider that I drive it hard, lots of city miles with an aggressive driving style. In the 75,000 miles I have put on it, the distributor went out, $250 to fix. The sunroof motor broke, a $1,200 repair that I have not had done. The electric antenna motor broke, ($225) probably because I bent the antenna on a low tree branch. The drivers window motor went out ($300), probably because I operated it with heavy frost on it. I also had to replace a valve gasket for $300. I try to remind myself that things can break on any car. I replaced the front brakes and timing belt at 60,000 and am just now putting on my second set of bridgestone tires. Good tires, but expensive. In the final analysis, I would not buy it again. The purchase price was about $4,000 less than a similar Camary. I've put about that much into the Mazda. No one can say for sure, but I suspect a Toyota or Nissan would not have had the same problems.
I agree with this review. Since I bought my 1994 Mazda 626
ES V6, I've had to replace the front rotors, head gasket,
timing belt, alternator, transmission (twice), I spent like
$6000 Canadian in two years. Then I bought a popular used
car buying guide book and found that between 1993 and 1996
Mazda 626's had a lot of problems, in 1998 Mazda fixed most
of their problems. So I will looking to buy a Mazda Millenia
S with a Miller Cycle Engine. Mazda's are not bad cars, just
needs a lot of maintenance. If you're willing to spend that
extra dollar then go for it. Or else I would not recommend
this car.
Just wondering what is the light thing you guys talking about?
I own a Mazda 626 ES as well. I would love to get rid of it. But I have spent so much money on this junk that I can't afford another car. Every month it takes me to the garage for one thing or the other. I kick it once a week and curse it for the bad luck it has brought upon my family. I could have saved that money and bought a much better car. I am on the 4th transmission. Transmissions made by Ford of North America. Electrical light goes on. Links are bad again. Gasket's leaking again. Manifold gap cannot be fixed. What next ? I wish I had an enemy who I can donate this car to. Does anyone want a 1994 Mazda 626 ES?
