1993 Mazda 626 LX from North America - Comments

"A comfortable car, but very high maintenance"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Exhaust system problems requiring new muffler every 2-3 years. Also front pipe every 2 years (very expensive for flex pipe coupling)

Inner tie rods wore early. Extended Mazda warranty would not cover.

Ignition wires replaced prematurely.

Brakes wear early. Mazda brake parts inferior. Better results with aftermarket parts.

Sunroof and airconditioning wore out early.

Valve noise after 180,000 miles; doesn't seem to affect performance; apparently this is typical of this car;

changing oil to 10w 40 helps... also adding valve quiet additive helps.

Head gasket problems requiring early repair.

Stabilizer bushings require frequent replacement.

General comments?

1993 Transmsion has been excellent. 290000 km and still good. (have replaced fluid every 48,000km)

Engine still good after 290,000km.

(oil replace every 5,000km).

The Mazda 626's transmission is faulty from the start. Even those that have purchased a 626 prand new have had immediate problems with the transmission and/or the Overdrive/"HOLD" feature of its automatic trans. It has an inefficient cooling system that causes the trans. to overheat and slip gears while in gear or may even lock up on you. Many dealers will even say that the hard shifting is "normal". Well, it is, but it's not how any car should be performing.

The solution to this problem is to get a transmission cooling kit so it won't overheat. If the car is relatively old, then I would go ahead and sell the car and get a Toyota, Hyundai, or Nissan.

Hi, I'm 17 and have just bought a 1992/1993 626 2.0 Automatic as my first car. I've been reading about the Hold button problem was wondering if the problem affected all the cars or only some. I'm in Australia and my hold button is flashing occasionally. It starts flashing after around 15 minutes of driving. At one stage the car was shuddering and the revs would go up and down. I have only been able to get the hold button to stop flashing by stopping and putting it in Park. What is the worst case scenario, can I keep driving with this or is there a solution. It's booked in next week for a transmission service.
