1989 Mazda 626 GT review from Australia and New Zealand
"Quick, comfortable and fully loaded at bargain price"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
First was the clutch, which needed a complete new kit.
Head Gasket was next to go, but was poorly fixed first time, so required a second go including a new head, radiator and hoses. Oil and water are still in need of a second flush to remove remains of each other, in each other's places.
Most recent problem was a dead alternator, probably a result of previous problems (starting without running, using hazard lights when being towed (it happened a lot) )
Driver's seat suffered from elderly first owner having trouble getting in and out of the car.
General comments?
For a mid-sized family tourer it has acceptable performance. Its 110Kw is impressive for a 2.0L and will happily take on many modern cars of the same size engine, in terms of handling and straight-line performance.
The handling is very predictable and makes it a good performer point-to-point.
The cabin is cozy and options are plenty, although 15 years of existence has taken its toll with things quite prone to rattle and squeak.
A nice, inconspicuous car for an 18 year old, freshly licenced driver.
