It looks great, and it's comfortable, but it's a Ford and the transmission is horrible

1999 Mazda 626 ES review from North America

"Great car... so far.."

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Gauge Cluster bulb behind tachometer is inoperable.

The premium bose sound system head unit (the cd player) has trouble navigating through tracks, often skips and unbearably slow in general reading of discs.

The ceiling fabric seems to be coming off a little in the back.

There’s water under the car from the ac unit.

I hear a soft thumping in my trunk because the tire cover isn’t secured properly.

The brakes sequel extremely loud in high humidity weather.

The engine is great, but just doesn’t have enough kick as you would expect a 2.5L V6.

I’ve had zero problems of this car getting me from point a to b. I just had the serpentine and ac belt replaced and let me tell you, they where so dry rotted I bet they were the originals. So 120k on it’s original belts is pretty good.

The transmission didn’t swift quite so smoothly at first, but you guys half to remember that draining your transmission fluid is a regular part of normal car maintenance. IMO it should be done once a year. After it was replaced with new fluid the shifts are smooth as silk!

General comments?

I’m a taller gentleman at 6’2, I needed something with a tad more legroom than my previous compact. To me there is ample leg room in the back and though my knees still hit the bottom of the steering wheel, this is the best car without going to a full size.

Surprisingly the gas mileage is extremely good. I had an induction service done on my car and I only half to fill it up as often as my old vehicle.

No more broken hubcaps with alloy rims!!! YAY!

With all the problems I’ve had with it so far, they're just small cookies… This isn’t to say something could go wrong, but when ford and mazda get together it isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I still see a lot of taurus sho on the round. :)
