"Economical and tough and powerful, lightwieght."

What things have gone wrong with the car?

The cylinder head developed a tiny crack, the entire unit was replaced.

Air/fuel solenoid failed at 181,900 kilometers, along with the catalytic converter, both were replaced with new units.

Timing belt and fuel pump/rubber fuel lines were replaced (pre cautionary maintenance).

Stock clutch finally wore out at 175,000 kilometers.

General comments?

I upgraded the air filter to a K/N washable performance filter. oil filter was changed to a dual filter unit, with 2 K/N oil filters.

Installed a Aurora Electronics (Canadian made locally) drag race coil and 10mm stainless steel core plug wires. (stock coil output = 15,000 volts, Aurora coil output 95,000 volts (cannot measure the amperage at the plug (gauge won't go any higher than 400 amps). Accel copper core non resistor spark plugs gapped at.060"

custom made distributor advance plates (adjustable)

high flow converter and glasspack exhaust, swept out the side of the truck .

I have run the truck with Redline 10W40 synthetic oil since the 3500 km mark, along with Redline synthetic manual transmission oil, Redline synthetic rear differential oil.

Replaced the stock battery cables with 0/1 gauge heavy duty welding cable and a dual battery setup (2 Optima redtop batteries), upgraded the 55 amp stock alt to a Bosch 65 amp unit.

Replaced the stock 2 core rad with a 3 core B2600 4x4 radiator, also new heater /rad hoses.

once all the mods were done i had the truck tested on the dyno. stock horsepower and torque was 85 HP and 115 LBS of torque. after the mods were done, the truck tested out at: 140 HP and 235 LBS of torque.

at time of this article, the truck has 182,000 kilometers on the original engine. cylinder compression is still at stock levels +/- 2 per cylinder.

I plan to convert the rear of the truck to a flat deck, with a job box bolted to the deck and a rear facing winch carrier.

I have a 1991 B2200 Mazda Pick Up and I love it, but, with over 150k on it, it is starting to ask for some TLC. The problem here is finding someone a (mechanic) who know Mazda's well enough. I am having a problem with the automatic gearshift lever, well maybe not. You see it seems to be a hit or miss whether or not the transmission will engage. Started with the safety button; would not be pressed to allow shifting, had to jiggle to find the right spot to get home - now I need to be extremely gentle with excelloration for trans to engage - start out - take any hills. Once moving all is fine. Gear lever is loose, has alot of play in it.

The most recent reviewer obviously knows B2200 / 91's and knows they are keepers - just hoping for suggestions to find what may be wrong with my little truck. I really do not think the trans needs to be rebuilt etc...

Great truck - do not want to part with it but, a new trans I cannot afford, and tranny stores just want to rebuild the whole thing "to be sure" or it's their policy once they have it all apart. My gut feeling is - this is not necessary, I just need more knowledge on this subject.

Thanks.

Try adjusting the shift linkage on the auto transmission. check for loose bolts/nuts on the linkage pivot points. I'm not sure if there is a vacumn hose on the tranny, sometimes (like on my old bronco), the hose pops off and creates havoc with the shifting.

Other causes can be dirty or old (worn out) tranny fluid. try draining the fluid and change the filter on the drain pan. refill with mazda spec auto tranny fluid and see if that helps you out.

There may be nylon bushings in the shift lever itself that have cracked or worn out.

Your best bet is to try and obtain both a Haynes and a Chilton repair manual. both have troubleshooting chapters. good luck.

I was wondering how much it cost and how difficult the modifications were to install. I have the exact same truck and would love to get some more power and life out of it, I have the k/n and am getting a new exhaust tomorrow. I hope its not to late for my truck, I would love to go to synthetic and keep it living forever, but the damage may have already been done. The dyno numbers you posted are insane, if I could get anything near that I would stick with my truck forever.

Hi. I read about what you did to your Mazda truck. I would like to get some of the same horsepower ratings out of my truck until I can afford the 350 swap. I was curious on how much all the parts ran you and if there were any parts you didn't feel were worth it that you purchased or anything like that. Every comment helps. Thanks.

If you could email me at fading_vision@hotmail.com that would be great.
