1987 Mazda B2600 from North America - Comments

"Nice 4x4, but unreliable and always spending money on it"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Well my Mazda B2600 is a 1987 and the body/paint is in excellent shape just like when I first bought it. When I first bought it it had a timeing chain/knocking problem which I knew about, but the price was right I replaced the chain and it still made noise so I drove it like that for about 8 months and found a good used motor for it, it ran good and sounded good at first and didn't burn any oil, about 3 months after I installed this motor it started burning a little more oil and about 2 months after that it started burning oil by the barrel, now about 9 months after this motor was put in it's a huge oil burner and its embarrassing to drive it smokes so bad!I use 20w50 oil and add oil treatments on a regular basis and it still smokes.

General comments?

My comments about a mazda pick up is good, but I don't like the mitsubishi motors that they used at the time, if I only knew how bad theses motors were at the time I would have never bought it! a friend who is a mazda master mechanic saidthe motor are terrible, and suggested to me to find a motor from maybe a chev to install in it.

Hi, I have a 1987 b2600 also and would like to say that the motors do have their problems and so does mine. In fact as I'm type my truck is having another motor installed in it and looking forward to getting it back. They are fun little toys.

I did notice in you comments that your friend said to put a Chevy motor in it. I would like to know if that is possible and which motor I can put in place of the 2.6 that I have?

Thank-you for your time and please E-mail me if anyone has an answer. kev_0110@hotmail.com.

I have a 1987 Mazda B2600 4x4, and I need some serious advice. I put a motor in the truck and when I cut the truck off the carburetor loads up with gas. It does not have an electric fuel pump only mechanical. I Have already put 3 new Carbs on her. Can some one please help me. She is a perfect truck other than this, and this is making my gas mileage 10 miles per gallon. Please email me at whitetailhunter182004@yahoo.com HELP!!!

I am in the process of buying an engine for a 1987 Madza 4x4 truck. Is this a good idea or should I invest in another truck or brand of engine.

The G54B (2.6L Mitsu.) engine is a well built engine. The balance shaft is a key component. They are in a variety of cars and pickups and are built like an industrial motor. With a weber carb and open exhaust they can easily reach 30 mpg in the Mazda pickup. The only issue with the Mazda pu engine is the head. Mazda put a different 12 valve head on it, when the others were a mitsu. 8 valve head. I run the 8 valve head in my mazda. Haven't had a single problem. The engine has over 500,000 miles on it with a reman. head and first rebuild after 350,000 miles. At 350,000, the rod and main bearings looked brand new thanks to the balance shafts. These are awesome engines, it is well worth the time to rebuild! Kits are not much and they are easy to work on.

I have an 1987 B2600 Mazda 4x4. I'm putting it in a tough truck race. I would like to swap the carb on it. Does anyone know what other kinds of carbs I could put on it that don't have all those vacuum hoses? Thanks, email me at jjbelgum@yahoo.com
