I purchased a brand new 1999 Mazda Millenia for all the luxurious bells and whistles it had: leather seats, seat warmers, sun-roof, cd player, remote key access. What a deal for the price until all those things that made it luxurious stopped working right after the 3 year warranty ran out. The key alone would’ve cost $400.00 to replace. The sun-roof will open, but then cannot close—another $400.00 to fix. The seats stopped getting warm, the cd player stopped playing cds. I’ve taken it for every maintenance, service and oil change, yet every 3 months since it reached 60,000 miles, it’s been in the shop. It has 86,000 miles now, but I have a laundry list of things that have broken and cost an arm and a leg to replace. The water pump had to be replaced. So did the fuel filter, distributor, all the spark plugs (over and over and over) again. It has been tuned up, yet ALL the belts broke—I didn’t even know there was more than one belt that could break. The car has broken down in the middle of traffic. Now it simply won’t accelerate and needs a new air flow meter. I have had to replace everything under the hood except the engine. I’m waiting for the transmission to go so I can simply set fire to it and put it and me out of our misery. I would never get another Mazda and I feel the utmost sympathy for anyone who does.
I have nothing good to say about this car except it looked pretty when I drove it home.
I wanted to correct the mileage on my 1999 Milenia. It is 74,000 not 84,000. And I neglected to mention that the compressor blew up at the beginning of the summer and since I absolutely refuse to spend the $1,200.00 to fix, I actually spent the entire summer in DC sweating in that piece of crap car!
That really sucks... My girlfriend had one of these cars 3 years ago and it needed a new transmission. I had also replaced the thermosat and then the raditator failed. Then coolant started to leak out of the over flow. One day my g. f got rear ended by a truck and the car was totalled. She now drives a ford explorer since then it has not given her problems, KNOCK ON WOOD!. Ford has over 170,000 miles and it is still running strong.
I've had issued with my 99 Mazda. I've spent so much money on this car. My engine light stays on at all times. Took it to find what the code was. c2 code. Timing belt replaced. New seals replaced and I can go on and on with the car repairs. It's a very pretty car. I get a lot of compliments on the car. But I'm so disappointed in the car. I will never in my life purchase a Mazda. It was my first and my very last. Never again. It is not a car I would recommend.
I also have a 1999 Mazda Millenia S. It has 107000 miles on it.
The check engine light is on, but is causing NO problems. I drive my car like Mario "f"-ing Andretti. Every 10 miles I drive is like someone else driving 500 miles, yet this car is STILL running like a top.
So you had to replace the "fuel filter", so what! That's not the cars fault, it's the dirty gas you're putting in it.
The car has the engine, it has to be opened up. As my boss would always tell me when I'd get mad about something not working right, "it's not the machinery, it's the operator".
I purchased my 99 Millenia one yr ago with 87,000 miles on it and it ran great for about 3 months - got in one day and NO HEAT. Had that repaired for appx $400. Some sort of blower.
It started to burn oil, which required my attention for the next few months, and then white smoke began to billow from the muffler. First, as soon as I cranked it, then for about the first 5 miles of driving - Seemed that it was burning a quart a day! (under normal driving conditions) no more than 40 miles per day. Progressively getting worse, I had 2 different mechanics look at it and say they wouldn't touch it. After the car began to ting, clank and pop, I was forced to drive it to the Mazda dealership. Recv'd the news yesterday that for $1300, they would repair the supercharger and replace the spark plugs that were filed out.
All of this within the first yr of owning it. Best part of it all, I still owe 48 payments on this car. There is no other option other than repairing it. No one could satisfy the amount owed on it if I didn't try to sell it repaired. And I'm not even sure that I could get the amount owed then! That being said, I love the car in general. It is a beautiful car and when it is running, runs great. I am not easy on it either. I purchased it because I wanted that extra oommph and I use it when at all possible.
I really have been dis-satisfied with the performance of this car. I hope that Mazda has revisited the components of this car that make it so un-reliable. I can't imagine how it would behoove them to have so many unhappy customers. I won't purchase another one.
I bought my 1999 2.5 Liter Mazda Millenia new, and it now has 162,000 miles. It was ahead of its time in style and equipment.
My wife has damaged the front end 3 times in bumper to bumper traffic, and after all the repairs it still looks and runs great.
The only problems incurred so far are with the Check Engine light, which all were related to emissions control devices such as the knocks sensor. I have since bought an OBD2 code reader to determine the true problems. At least I can determine if I can do the repair myself or get a competitive bid. The dealer will charge at least $90 to tell you the problem. Code reader cost $99.
There are some maintenance issues the owner can perform. Dealer wanted $250 to change out 6 spark plugs. Bought the same identical plugs for $12.50 and did it myself. Bottom line is if you take care of the car, it will take care of you.
I have owned my Millenia for 5 years, I have loved and endured this car for what seems an eternity. I bought my car used with 65,000 miles on it, she now has 147,000 miles... not without investment..
This has been a labor of love, she is so stinkin pretty, and pretty expensive. I have had many check engine lights, many tire replacements, I have used the best oils and gasoline available... this car will suck you dry.
I love to drive this car, however, she is an expensive and high maintenance fem. The tires are expensive, no one has any idea how to work on it in your area... trust me on that. Try having the plugs and coils replaced without dipping into your kids, or, your college account. Buy this car as cheap as possible!!! It's beautiful, it's hot... you need a sugar daddy, or momma, to keep it runnin' but when it runs...it's unbelievable.
cel #1 $1,250.00 O2 sensor and precat
cel #2 $750.00 plugs and 1 coil pack
cel #3 $851.00 plugs and 2 coil packs
Tires $150.00 per tire, have replaced 10 tires.
Gas -- must use premium $$$.
Don't get me wrong, I love this car, I have taken care of this car.
My Mazda mechanic told me the last time that I was there to ignore the cel. I wanted to believe that I could, but I didn't.
I put another $654 into this beautiful babe of mine, thinking I could continue to ignore the angry glow of the cel. I couldn't. The car is running great, how bad could it be? Let's just get that irritating light and make it be gone...
I made the call, they checked it, they called... I cried...
Anti-freeze leaking into the engine. $3,500. No one was there to hand me the tissue, I couldn't stomp, I couldn't rant, I couldn't rave.
I have a cracked head? Duh... my head.
For buying this car.
