1991 Mazda MX5 V Special Eunos review from UK and Ireland
"The Worlds Best Selling Sports Car"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Only had it seven months - and no problems whatsoever, quite surprising for a eleven year old car.
General comments?
My parents bought the exact same model a year before me, and after a few sneaky drives I knew I had to get one. After all I was driving a Mark 2 UNO!
These cars are fantastic, I was little worried stepping up from a little run around to a Sports Car thinking that I would wreck it within a month - the right foot can be a little heavy sometimes, but I'm still here and with a huge grin on my face.
I am still surprised how many heads turn, especially with all the rude boy cars in my area.
It has a great spec - Tan Leather, Electric Windows, Electric Antenna, Air Con, Wood Steering Wheel, Gear Nob, Handbrake lever, Speakers in the Headrest (Great for driving with the top down), Alloy Wheels (I got with a nice set of Multi Spoke Devize's), Scratch Plates - I could go on!
One great aspect of ownership is support through the members club. The whole of the UK is covered and split into regions and there is always someone to advise for where to get parts, where to go for servicing etc.
Furthermore, uprating you MX is easy with the number of websites with modding parts available. I have added a K&N induction kit for a bit more oomph, uprated the stereo (it really kicks now) added extra leather finishes inside etc. And believe me there is still plenty to do.
The car came lowered on Koni shocks and so the car handles very well in that there is barely any body roll - the rider is rougher than most - however the dampers can be adjusted otherwise. As a result Maxine is one of the lowest cars on the road and isn't a fan of speed bumps - still I wouldn't change her back to normal ride height - she just looks so much better for it.
Performance is good - remember I was driving an Uno - and I still insist on being first off the line at the traffic lights and can beat most of the rude boys with their turbo's and xri's in my area which is of enormous satisfaction.
I do plenty of long runs in her and she is quite happy on the motorway, she can be a little noisy at times, but I am usually blasting the stereo anyway and cannot hear any wind noise!
She can be a little skittish in the wet if you push her, getting the correct tyres is quite important, and I am running Pirelli P6000's which are fine.
If you live in the city, and alarm is a must - they can be easily broken into - just a knife through the top - so never leave any valuables inside - I have seen quite taped up soft tops where vandals have tried their worst.
I can't recommend these cars enough - they are not hairdressers cars - far from it, they are not based on any other, they are true sports cars and are modern classics. Just go and buy one!
