1999 Mazda MX5 10th Anniversary Edition from North America - Comments

"Beautifully styled roadster with cornering abilities like no other and reliability to boot!"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Interior door latch squeaked when newer, dealer fixed no charge.

Cigarette lighter quit.

Convertible roof 'cables' broke after 6+ years.

Roof now leaking (I live in rainy Vancouver area in British Columbia). Taking it to the dealer next week after near record rain fall over the past month+.

Hard to shift in cold weather recently.

General comments?

This is a great car if you can get away with a 2- seater! I would recommend it to people 5'10 or less (I'm 5'11+ and I'm slightly too tall). I removed the sun visors to give a better line of sight, and bought some decent sunglasses! You can fit 2 sets of golf clubs in the trunk, or a reasonable amount of stuff from Costco. (I've even carried 10 ft. x 1 ft. shelving strapped into the passenger seat!)

It handles better than any other car I've ever driven, including a porsche! Turns on a dime, goes thru corners like a hot knife thru butter!

It has fair power, but it's no neck-snapping corvette. It is 'usable' power, mostly at 4-5,000 rpm so for most people, you won't need much more unless you're a gear head... I might recommend an aftermarket turbo kit to get up to 180- 200 hp. or more (stock is about 140).

The 10th anniversary edition is gorgeous- unlike any other MX-5. 'Mica Blue', with a body kit, rear spoiler, fog lights, polished chrome 15' mags with 50 series Michelin pilot sport tires, biltstein struts, limited slip differential, strut tower bar, Bose stereo system, 2 tone leather seats, leather wrapped steering wheel & shift knob.

When I first saw it in the showroom (back in 2000, a lease return with only 5500km) my jaw dropped, I started drooling, and my heart went pitter-patter!

Update to the above comment- the rain leak has pretty much stopped- I removed & cleaned the rubber seals and the leak hasn't returned. The stiff clutch was due to a leaky clutch slave cylinder- a relatively cheap fix. I recently replaced front brake pads, rebuilt the calipers & machined the rotors at about 78,000km. I have 4 snow tires on a slightly smaller steel wheel (14"), and it has been excellent in the snow! I put a bit of weight in the trunk for added traction, and it's great. Still getting comments on it being a great looking car. Currently torn about selling it, as I may be starting a family. My wife has a 4 door Hyundai Elantra GT hatchback, anyone have any input for 2 car families, 1 being a miata/MX-5?
