1993 Mazda MX6 LS Mystere review from North America

"Fun and responsive"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Well The MX6s has it number of problems like most cars.

Rear caliper seizing up constantly, fixed by buying Protege 5 Calipers and Pads for the rear (it's a direct bolt on). The Clutch 3" clutch line that goes to reservoir that can leave you stranded if you didn't switch it over to braided stainless steel. Disty ignitor failures on my gen (93-94 OBDI), rotting sunroof and under or around the spoiler, Trunk seal failing and getting water in the interior and rotting the floor. The Hydraulic lifters if your stupid enough to run on non-synthetic oil, Mobil-1 or Royal Purple only ppl. the Valve Cover Gaskets... the only thing that really pisses me off on this car. When the rear one goes. They don't last very long 2-3 years seems. The front one takes like 20 minutes to do, rear is like 3 hours. Auto Transmission (I don't have) is built by FORD and lives up to the FORD's quality, I have known many ppl that have it fail 6-12 months after a rebuild. To the point where they sell their car or do the auto to manual swap. SO NEVER BUY AN AUTO MX6, FORD PROBE or 626. Unless you have deep pockets.

General comments?

The drivers seat is sooooooooo comfortable and the side wraps around you, so you don't got flying into the passenger or door when turning hard (leather). I have a bad back and this is the only vehicle I have been in where it doesn't bother me to do 3+ hours driving trips. (have been in a 740i, sorry beamer guys the seats bother me)

This car accelerates pretty decently. 15.5ish 1/4 mile (bone stock). Replacement 200HP KLZE engines are very cheap like $700-$1000, which drop you down into the high 14s (provided you get the jspec ECU or reprogram the A-spec ECU with the new VRIS Points). More info can be found at www.mx6.com, they are the gods of MX6s 626s. www.probetalk.com for probes.

The stock suspension blows. Car sits too high and is pretty easy to spin out on corners.

Car looks sexy, clean lines, it's not a beast, but gets the job done.

The Stock clutch is a complete joke, slips brand new... Upgrade it to a stage 0 or 1. Anything higher beats up the tranny and makes stop and go traffic lots of fun!

This many seem like a lot but I have driving the living Sh*T out of this car since I got it. And it has never left me stranded once. The car isn't too bad to work on. Somethings can be a pain to do. The fuel economy is okay. get about 650KM highway /tank and 400ish city /tank. Tank is 50Litres or 51. Never drove it to total empty lol.

Rear seat actually fits ppl, as long as they aren't 6' or taller or fat. It does fit a car seat in both positions. However is a pain to get in and out.

In conclusion to all of this, I fixed just about everything on the car myself, except the clutch and exhaust. I did this with no experience. You educate yourself say MX6.com Fordprobe.com, alldatadyi, hayes and chilton. You'd be surprised what you learn. Currently training now as a Truck and Motorcoach Freightliner specialist.
