What things have gone wrong with the car?
Both rear stabilizer mounts before 100,000 miles.
Cam cover gasket before 100,000 miles.
Anti-lock brake unit and both rear calipers at 120,000 miles.
Distributor at about 130,000 miles.
Master cylinder at 150,000 miles.
Door wiring corroded (and deadened battery) at 175,000 miles, possibly related to collision and replacement of door.
Alternator failed at 200,000 miles.
Several oil leaks that are not yet
resolved.
Some rusting, notably on trunk lid and sunroof (sunroof since replaced).
General comments?
Please do not get the wrong impression from the length of this list. This is a high-mileage car that still looks great, drives great, and is easily the best car I have ever owned. The seats are the best I have ever experienced, but the (optional) tan leather wears out quickly on the left side bolster.
By the way, this car has not been babied. I do regular maintenance, but I have driven it at speed on three race tracks.
Anyone considering this model (and the similar 626 and Ford Probe) is well advised to avoid the automatic transmission; there have been numerous stories of expensive failures. My clutch, on the other hand, is still original! It is very possible, however, that most of the problem units by now have been suitably replaced.
All in all, a great car. Highly recommended.
