Just visited the mazda musuem in hiroshima, fantastic, a new 71 model rx 3 coupe, metallic brown colour and and an rx 2 and 4 and cosmo. owned a few rx 3 s, great cars want another, but now they shouldn't be driven as a daily driver, too rare.
I'm planning on buying a RX3, my mates have all talked me into it. I don't know that much about rotary motors (I'm a chick), I was wondering if anyone could help me with the difference between 12a and 13b, I know 13b is better, but what is the power difference and gas mileage like. I have decided not to buy a WRX and go for a old school car.
If you don't know much about motors I would not advise getting any sort of 30 year old car!
Everything I've read, including reviews of the current RX-8, seems to indicate that any rotary engine is NOT a good engine for anyone not familiar with mechanics. A WRX is a more conventional engine and will give you less trouble, especially given it is upwards of 30 years younger depending on model you buy.
Mazda did not continually pursue rotary technology in every model for a reason.
C'mon guys you should be encouraging the women into the rotary crew. The more the better I reckon haha.
If you're not into full on power, I'd go for the good ol 12AT, a great strong engine, and better for ol' skool RX's I reckon.

The numbers relate to the displacement 12a =1200cc's 13b = 1300cc's just like a 2 litre or a n 1.8 litre. Because of the design of a rotary the displacement is doubled to compare to a piston so a 12a is similar to a 2.4 litre engine. (this is not very accurate however. in every sense there is no replacement for displacement and rotaries are no different. standard a 12a is bot much different hp wise to a 13b, but the 13b has a lot more torque. now days you can only get 13b's either in the new rx8's or the rx7s (anything from 86 on) and the 20b in the cosmos of the 90's. so if want a new motor to go in the rx3 it will be a 13b most likely. Rx3's came out with 10a and 12a motors and if you get an original motor its worth looking into what model and the condition as all the motors are different in standard trim from year to year. some are more receptive to porting some have better factory ports, but not much room for modding.
