I just acquired an '87 300E sedan. It's in very good condition. The passenger-side window is stuck in the closed position, and since it sat for several years, the battery needs to be charged, or replaced.
I don't know where to begin on improvements, but reading through these comments has given me inspiration.
Hi Everybody... Whatever you do.. Make sure you really know your mechanic. That's the key, trusting the one who places his hands on YOUR BABY. That's how I address mines. I bought it used. Yes it was minor things that were needed. Right now I am having to fix my windows that want go down. (Electric) I still love her. I have also invested almost $10,000.00 into this car (seriously) Same mechanic. But let me say this I love her, and no I am not rich. Email me @ CreativelyBeckies@cox.net. YOU DO HAVE A GREAT CAR! IT RUNS LIKE HELL. I AM KEEPING MY BABY. GOD BLESS you guys!!!
Oh, by the way I found me a new mechanic. The words Mercedes Benz make them think you have real money. The person may think that they got away for charging me so much, but in the end he loses. Get what I mean. But I still love my Baby. Good Luck guys. Use your better judgement. I need to ride now. Air condition does not keep cool, so I bought one of those fans you can connect to your visor (smile)
I live in Windsor, Ontario. I just bought a 1987 300-E MB!
It has 319,488 kilometers! Runs just great. (my previous one was a 190-E, 2.3 lt. engine and had 683,000 KMS on it!) I have this for two months now. After driving for over 6000 Kms, the oil level in the dip stick remains at the same since the last oil change. And as for gas mileage, it is a bit heavy for city driving, but long distance highway driving I get AT LEAST 610 KM (per tank) even before it goes into reserve!
I do have a minor issue here.. the muffler was so rusted that it just broke loose and fell off on the road. There are so many places where a new muffler can be installed and the prices that I so fare got was $520+taxes and $50.00 for installation. But the truth is that a muffler from the MB dealers is just $298.00 + taxes. People think that after market products will be cheaper... and go to other paces. I suggest that one should FIRST check with the dealers and then try else where. But OEM parts are the best.
The motorized antenna if not working can be replaced with a new one available at any auto parts store. I have no problems with the power windows and the moon roof. Just have to clean the sliding roof and well lube it, specially before the winter.
For the last 30 years I have always driven a MB. Even if your transmission works well. Just add a bottle of 'LUCAS TRANSMISSION FIX". It is the best thing to do and will recondition the tranny.. even fix some sticky, slipping gears. once every 48,000 KM do a complete transmission service.. There is no point in just changing the tranny filter and replacing about 4 liters of fluid, which just mixes with the dirty old trans. fluid which is in the torque converter. 100% of the fluid should be replaced. MR. LUBE does a great job on that line... called T-TECH.
Know your mechanic well... 99.90% are crooks... so get the one who will be at least 0.05% less a crook.
Have fun and enjoy your car!!!
