"A very powerful and reliable car"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Car does not shift from 1st to 2nd gear smoothly.

Exhaust system began to fall off around 210,000 miles, but the bands that hold it were replaced for $20.

Speaker wiring beginning to go bad.

Fuse for the power seats blew and the seats did not move.

Power locks don't work anymore.

Air conditioner vent for the back seats does not work anymore.

Panel for the windows/seats in the back seat was hanging off, but was glued back in.

General comments?

Amazing engine, still pulls 0-60 in 7-8 seconds at 220,000 miles.

Front seats begin to feel uncomfortable after driving for a while.

Extremely reliable, I don't think this car will ever stop working.

About your problem with the trannie not shifting smooth from 1st to 2nd gear, that is mostly normal in earlier 80's to late 80's MB's. I was told that by my mechanic who's been fixing Mercedes cars for the past 20-30 years, and they are very good. I own a 300SD and have the same problem, but you either get used to it or USE Lucas Transimission fluid, which is about $8 a quart, but when added to your trannie, it does make a noticable difference and smoothens the shifting.

Great curb appeal, these are fine pieces of machinery. I ENCOURAGE you if you're a larger man, that you seriously consider a 560SEL. I like buying at auction because you can

get the car for rock bottom. As gas creeps up in price the 560Sel becomes more affordable.

I recommend if your lookling at 560SEL's that you start at

the top 1991 and work downward. The later models had a slightly bigger engine and a superior sound system.

I personally have an 87 with a sun roof., red leather.

And chrome wheels.

I have friend who is thinking about selling his 1986 560SEL with 67,000 miles for $8k. It is in great shape. Is that a fair price?

One of the safest cars I have EVER owned, I was hit on the drivers side at 50 mph by a corolla and my Mercedes 560 got me home with no problem. Sadly I had to total it due to a gas tank rupture = (

As well as the above statement about the transmisson; All you needed to do is play with the vacuum control valve and it will shift beautiful!
