1985 Mercedes-Benz S-Class 300SD review from North America
"The pinnacle of German sedans"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Purchased car from family of original owner in June, 2005. Needed two front tires IMMEDIATELY. Since purchase, have replaced shock absorbers, factory radio, right rear power window lifter sliding jaw, air cleaner mounts, and rebuilt the climate control pushbutton unit.
General comments?
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!! I bought this car to replace my rapidly deteriorating 1982 240D. The 240D was beat up when I bought it in 1996, but I kept it going into 2005. So, I wanted another Mercedes diesel. My "new" 1985 300SD burns no oil and behaves like a brand new car out there on the road. I anticipate 20-30 years of trouble free driving out of this car, given proper maintenance.
General comments on the 300SD. Find one that's been well-maintained. These cars are solid. They aren't race cars, but the OE 617 series 3.0L inline 5 turbodiesel is quite competent and will keep up nicely in traffic. They are comfortable, safe, and you'll fall in love with them. Once you go Mercedes, it's hard to go back.
