1980 Mercedes-Benz W123 240 D review from North America
"The Mercedes diesels are the best cars I have ever owned"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
It was neglected and bought for the sum of $600.00 it had a bad clutch, vacuum diaphragm in the vacuum pump, clutch slave cylinder, oxidized paint, no hubcaps or hood ornament. Mind you I am a service mechanic in the marine field. I undertook the work with out a service manual the clutch took two hours to change the vaccum diaphragm took about 30 minutes to change the hub caps were freebies as was the hood ornament. Oh I forgot I up graded to the fast cycle glow plugs and adjusted the valves and installed a new rocker cover gasket The parts are inexpensive easy to install, the car is fun to work on.
General comments?
My girlfriend goes to college in MI. she had been driving a Mazda that has broken down on her twice and left her stranded I have driven from DC to MI. twice to fix her car because the shops up there wanted more to fix it than it was worth. So having enough of that I said I am going to put you in a car that is safe for you to drive and won't turn in to a accordion if it's hit. It won't go to fast so you won't get tickets and you will have a car that will last and something big enough to fit your clothes and college junk in when you have to go back in forth to school.
Being the owner of a number of MB 123 series cars I said the 240 D is perfect for you. She balked and said why a 240 and not a 300 D I said it goes to fast.
Said 21 y/o girl friend drove it around DC for a week before returning to MI for school. She loves the car her friends spoof on her a little for driving a tank. She's over that now and you couldn't pry the key for that car from her mitts if you tried. I'm afraid when she goes back to MA. for Christmas her Dad might be jealous and try to abscond with it. The 240 D is a great classic car one of the safest, best and most reliable cars one could own.
