Excellent service for the money
Radiator had to be replaced at 195000 kilometers.
Transmission tail piece replaced (crack).
Cruise control stopped working, haven't fixed yet. Since horn doesn't work anymore I think the problems might be isolated in steering column somewhere (fuses all good).
Vacuum leak freaks out the heating system (blows gusts of hot air when under load)
Door handles and locks can't take mild winter weather followed by cold snap. This makes it a real challenge getting in the car. Freezing rain and subsequent cold turns the wagon into Fort Knox.
Having trouble with the rear door (station wagon) locks and power window.
This is probably the best value I ever got for my money. I am a student who has traveled 60 kms a day for the past year and a half with this beast. I must admit I have a lot of respect for the old wagon, although I usually drive it like a rental. It seems to get into its own when the speed hits about 115 kms (70 mph), and remains composed at much higher speeds, I'm told.

Regarding the horn and cruise control problems: A likely cause is a worn clockspring, which makes the electrical contact between the steering wheel and the column. If the steering wheel is removed you can easily see the clockspring and you should be able to tell if this is the problem. I have had similar problems with my 1988 Lincoln Town Car, which has the same steering column as your Mercury. Good luck! --M.D.L.
