1999 Mercury Cougar review from North America
"I really love the look of this car and I am not willing to give up on it just yet"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
I recently bought a 99 Mercury Cougar in April. Just got it paid off in September with 103000 miles on it. It had a salvage title on it and everyone told me not to buy it, but I love the way it looks; I wish now I would have listened.
I have only had minor problems with this car. The sunroof is broken, my trunk is being held open by a long pole to prop it open because the trunk latches are broken, but that all I knew when I bought it.
My only problem other than this has been it jolting (slipping) EXTREMELY hard as if someone had just ran into the back of my car when my speed would reach 35 mph, which was fixed by buying 2 bottles of Lucas, it doesn't do it half as bad as it did.
Now to my most recent.. I woke up one morning to start my car and it wouldn't start. It has never done this before, so my dad took it and thought it was the battery, so we bought a new battery and NEW alternator because it was cracked from the previous owners, who had wrecked the car and never replaced it, and also the car would die if you removed the positive wire.. or something like that.
We bought the alternator new and replaced it. It ran fine until the next morning, then it was dead again, and we took it to a mechanic and he looked for loose fuses and shorts, and found nothing that would be causing the battery to die overnight. So we tested our alternator and it was tested bad. It was brand new. And it was already dead by morning.
Something is draining the battery overnight and causing the alternator to go bad, and no one can tell us what. They told us it was the trunk light at first, but obviously it wasn't; they took that out and it still died.
I know that it dies after 8 hours though, because I was at work and it started when I left 9 hours later after it had been sitting in the parking lot the entire time.
I have had this car given back to me three times, and I was told it was fixed, just to get up in the morning and it be dead.
I really do not want to give up on it yet, since I just bought it less than a year ago. Can someone please help me? I am out of options.
