Engine main bearings gone due to oil pump failure.
Light switch.
Moon roof power assembly.
Automatic trans shifter broken off.
Quadraphonic AM/FM tape player right side amp fail.
Busted power seat middle button (back and forth up down)
My uncle bought this car off of his neighbor who bought it new.
It ran perfect up until 95 and then the Windsor went.
I asked about it and he gave it to me just in time.
It sat out in the middle of a field with a bull tied to it!
Its burnt orange with pale yellow interior.
I have very available interior option for that particular year.
The vinyl top (white) is still intact and in perfect condition.
Its hard to explain what it looks like from behind the wheel.
The driver and the hood ornament (intact) are 6+ feet away from each other, unbelievable.
It sits with the blown engine now and I'm deciding what to put in it. (anything)
Chrush it.
Put a Ford 302 in it. It's the same bolt pattern as the 351W, so you can use the existing transmission. There are lots of aftermarket toys available for the 302 thanks to Mustang enthusists.
The 351W had a stock compression of 8.3:1, so it's output was not great. A 4bbl 302, with 9:1 compression will run on regular gas and give you more power than the original.
I own a 78 cougar with a 351w check out after market parts. I rebuilt my 351w very resonably, it now has 435HP.And I love the car even more. It's truly a dream car. I hope to still be driving it ten years from now.
Keep it buddy and fix it up I still have the 77 fully loaded xr7 white landau roof over blue bottom with all white interior buckets, console everything is still intact, needs the motor done a 400 cu in, with trailer towing trans pac and I just bought a 77 red and whtie with whtie interior xr7 for chrome and body parts only the interior is red bench seats with 302. my xr7 has been looked after really well, I bought it new in 77 in a car town near winnipeg manitoba, I still have all the documentation for the car, gas and mileage log for the first two years, do all my own mechanical repair work, electrical nody etc. nice car and not too many around.
You either like it or you don't, and to those who don't, shows much they know.
I know my value of cars. I also have a 56 Canadian Meteor Rideau Crown Victoria of which there were only less than 600 produced, a 57 tbird with porthole hardtop top which I brought back from naples italy when I was in europe on military duties and found this bird sitting behind a old house in naples, turned out it was an old american doctor who worked in missionary camps in africa, this car has the original bill of sale "shipped from dearborn mich in 13 sept 1957 to naples ford, and to make driving easier in canada, it even came with a metric speedo cause it was shipped overseas for sale and use there.
I like to think I know my cars and the values of them, as I am also an auctioneer in british columbia canada that dabbles in classic and antique car sales.
Keep the cougar xr7, fix it up and drive it, but look after it and respect it, you will glad in years to come.
I was 23 when I bought my first cougar, 68 with a 289 white over blue and white button tuft interior which I did myself, like a fool I sold it when I ordered my 77 xr7. I got in 77, 3500 for it, a dad in portage la prairie manitoba bought it for his daughter who was a hairdresser and only drives it in the summer time and keeps it stored in her dads equipment shop on the farm in the winter. my 77 is waiting in the yard to come inside so I can start working on it and restore it to better than new condition. I have the complete $800 factory mechanical, electrical, body & trim, schematics, troubleshoot sheet, and diagnostic manuals from ford for 1977, which would be the same for 77,78, 79.
Nice car keep it, you don't see many around now, and that will add value to the car in years to come, for sure.
Enjoy the car ernie.
Put a Ford 302 in it, you won't regret it, although you may have to switch out the motor mounts, it is totally worth it.
