1999 Mercury Cougar V-6 review from North America
"May be cheap to buy, but is not cheap to own"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Brakes went bad at about 85,000 miles.. replaced for a whomping 800 dollars. even after they squeaked louder than a school bus.
The electrical system in this car is horrible. The voltage regulator went bad at 84,000 miles which caused every light in the whole car to dim. it was so bad I was pulled over on several occasions. when I brought it to get fixed, they said I had to replace my whole altenator. you would think that this would be a 150-200 dollar repair, but the estamte was about 500 dollars because they had to unhook the engine and lift it about 13 inches. never got it replaced.
Check engine light comes on and off.
Power steering hose went 3000 miles after I purchased it.
Trip odometer light malfuctioned, had to hit the top of the dash board to turn in on.
Strange noises came from the engine which were unexplainable through mechanics.
The interior design is made of plastic and elmers glue. the back seat became ridiculousy loose. it was covered under warranty, but they did a poor job which caused the carpeting to come out from under the seat leaving a flap.
Fog lights stopped working and cost a 125 dollars per fog lamp to replace.
Moon roof stopped working at 90,000 miles.
Strange clunk coming from the exhaust, had to take to the dealer 6 times. never fixed it completely. took it to my mechanic and ended up being the flex pipe was worn, causing the exhaust to be off track about 4 inches.
General comments?
The cars exterior body is great. I got into an accident rear ending an suv. knocked off their bumper, only got a little dent on the cougar.
Handling is great, I had a close call on the highway when someone didn't check their blindspot as I was passing them. car started spinning out at 75 mph, but I was able to regain control.
The car has a great top speed of 130 mph
I've won races against jettas, passats, civics, accords, and a few eclipses.
The stock radio is junk I replaced it with a panasonic to do justice.
Great looking car, always got comments. the paint shined nice and glossy at 100,000 miles and people still thought it was a brand new car.
The engine is a really big and doesn't fit in the car that well. head light bubls had to be replaced at a shop due to little working room. this problem causes little repairs to be expensive repairs.
