1992 Mercury Cougar LS review from North America
"It's a great, safe, luxurious, and reliable car"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
The typical 3.8 liter Head Gasket problem happened at 130,000 miles.
All of the power window and door lock switches went bad (the car lived its entire life on a 2 mile long dirt road, the contacts just got dirty)
The alternator was replaced at 136,000 miles.
It’s needed a new transmission since 130,000 miles, but I just keep having my mechanic service it and that usually fixes it for about 6,000 miles and only costs $89.00.
I had the driver’s side rear axle gasket replaced at 145,000 miles.
I put new rotors on the car at 138,000 miles.
The A/C is original, but I had to have the air gap in the clutch adjusted at 150,000 miles and had it re-charged with R-12 at the same time. The car had leaked just less than half the charge.
At 140,000 I replaced the driver’s side automatic safety belt motor assembly (I went to a wrecking yard and pulled one out of a 1993 Thunderbird)
Both of the doors sag and the driver’s side seal went bad at 140,000 miles.
The factory stereo is great, but the driver’s side speaker is blown.
The dash cracked at about 126,000 miles it’s not noticeable however it is brittle because of the sun exposure.
The interior is in mint condition with the exception of the very small crack in the dash. The seats and everything else are still dark red.
General comments?
Other than what’s listed above the car has been very reliable. My grand mother gave it to me for Christmas last year, and I’ve always loved the car. Now that I’ve owned it for a while and driven it everyday for several months I will not part with it until either it dies or I do.
It handles wonderfully, isn’t particularly snappy, but when you give it a little time to build speed it sure will go. I’ve gone well over 110 mph in it and the ride was still quiet and smooth as can be, it was also very easy to control.
The A/C does put quite a strain on the engine, but it’s not too bad and since I had it re-charged it blows ice cold within a few seconds.
I also bought the car a front-end mask, and had the windows tinted. It’s medium grey with red cloth interior and looks sharp especially with the white lettered tires I had put on.
Every thing that went wrong with the car was due to the fact that it wasn’t taken care of, but since I’ve had it I’ve brought it backs to its original luster and I get lots of comments from people who ride in it about the comfort and interior space the car has to offer.
I’m eighteen so I’m not your typical 1992 Cougar LS driver, but I do love my car and it was a nice move from my 1968 Ford F-250.
