1991 Mercury Grand Marquis LS review from North America
"A frugal, comfortable, reliable way to travel anywhere"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Transmission was rebuilt at 175,000 miles (cable that connects to throttle came loose, destroyed transmission).
Air Conditioning retrofitted to R-134A.
Driver's door window works poorly.
General comments?
This car is very comfortable, it will handle four adults & their luggage on a cross-country trip (>1000 miles) with no problem. Outside of the problems listed, it has been a trouble-free machine, which is amazing considering the age and mileage of the car. Uses virtually no oil. Both the interior and exterior have worn relatively little; the car looks better than many with half its mileage. Considering the age of the car, there seem to be a large amount of them still on the road, so this car really is not a unique case. For someone who has to commute long distances, it is perfect. The seats could have been pulled from a living room, soft and thick. Since it is an older design, parts are cheap and easy to find, and if something does go wrong, any mechanic can fix it. Fuel mileage not too bad (approx. 20mpg on highway). Acceleration not the greatest, but will attain illegal speeds while loaded with no problem.
