1992 Mercury Grand Marquis LS review from North America
"Big and luxurious, but it needs a good stereo!"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Well after buying the car I noticed the transmission wasnt running to smooth. So I had to get a tranny and fluid flush (the old people who I bought it from didn't really keep it in check for that kind of stuff).
Right now the front drivers side shock seems to be blown, so I'm thinking I should get that checked out soon.
The power windows and door locks seem to be tempermental, but they get the job done... eventually.
Other than that it's a solid car for the 2000 km I've put on it.
General comments?
Well lets start with the exterior. Shes definitely an old mans type of car, but its not too bad in my 16 year old eyes. There is only a tiny bit of rust on the passenger rear fender, but that's all. If a person were to give this car a nice new facelift (paint, new trim, etc.) and lower it a little it would be a real head turner.
Interior... well if you want to know the definition of comfort, buy this car. Even without the leather seat option this is possibly the most comfy car you will ever sit in. My only complaints are the Maroon color of my interior and the horrible stock sound system. But its made for long trips in comfort.
Performance. Well with this being a RWD V8, it seems to lack power off the line. This is partially due to the power loss in the transmission (about a 30 hp loss). But after you get this thing past 50 km/h the V8 really gets going and before you know it your above the speed limit. If your looking for a car that handles like a rail, look away cause the steering in this car is pretty scarey (the car has some major power assist on it, and you can't really feel the road through the wheel). For what its worth though, this creates an awesome easy to manuever full sized sedan in heavy traffic. What ever you do, make sure you know how to pilot a rwd in icy conditions. This power assist in any type of rain or snow is scary since you cannot feel anything through the steering wheel.
The sad part is, people with ricers think they can take you on... well with a few cheap tricks (including a high flow airfilter and a modified airbox) you will be stomping them into the ground and they will be left speechless as they watch the old mans car speeding away.
Generally, it's a big RWD V8 with power assist steering made for highway cruising.
