1970 Mercury Montego Cyclone Spoiler review from North America
"Brutal Bargain"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Rear tires need frequent replacement.
General comments?
Brutal, vicious, serious ride. not too many around, so most people don't know what it is and are suprised when this car blows their 454 SS Chevelle away in the quarter mile by 2.5 lengths. The low end performance is OK, but where this car excels is above 4k rpm, that is where it pulls like a freight train. I guess this is due to the massive intake ports, and huge valves, which isn't conducive to low rpm activities. The car suprisingly good for 1970 standards, not so good by todays. Gas mileage is appalling, but again gas was.35 a gallon when new.
When these cars were new, they were basically overlooked by the NASCAR teams, who chose to run the 68-69 Cyclone fastback. Then once those cars were too old, the 70-71 Cyclone performed above expectations, I have read where this became one of the greatest superspeedway cars of all times. The car has a unusual gunsight grille, which you either love or hate, though the intent is clearly there, meaning that gunsight was to used to shoot down other high flying musclecars, such as the Road Runners, Camaros, Corvettes, Chevelles, etc. Sounds like a good marketing angle anyway.
The Spoiler edition came with a wing on the trunklid and airdam in the front to reduce lift as speeds went up,
came standard with a 429 Cobra Jet Ram Air standard, with a 429 Super Cobra Jet engine with solid lifters, oil cooler, big holley, and either a 3.91 or 4.30 rear axle. The famous Boss 429 engine was to be optional, but for some reason they decided against this. What an awesome car that would have been! The Boss engine specs are listed in my owners manual, that's how close it came!
Though not as pretty as a Torino Cobra, I can appreciate its junkyard dog appearance, all business. Interiors are better that the Torino, as it has a 140 mph speedo, with other guages stretching across the dash, canted towards the driver.
If you want a stealth musclecar, this is it! While it may not be as quick out of the gate as a 428 Cobra Jet car, it is a much deeper breathing car on top end,
Compa.
