1993 Mercury Sable LS Wagon review from North America
"Head gasket and coolant system time bomb"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
23,500 Replaced front springs, defective front struts.
26,000 Replaced serpentine belt.
32,00 Replaced starter wire.
33,000 Check engine light on whenever car goes over 55 mph. Told it was a bad 02 sensor.
33,000 Replaced entire brake system.
56,200 Replaced serpentine belt
again.
60,000 Replaced thermostat TWICE because engine overheated in January. Problem did not go away.
60,100 Heat stopped being warm, related to thermostat issue.
60,500 Radiator hose blew and needed to be replaced. Warned that head gasket 'would go within the next six months' due to excessive coolant pressure.
69,000 Head gasket blew.
General comments?
Chronic problems include: an air bag light that never goes off, a check engine light that 'fixes itself' according to the manual, jerky shifting (engine mounts?), door seals sagging, door doesn't close tightly all the time, gas tank lock doesn't open when release is pulled, overheats frequently, coolant always low or empty when checked, excessive tire wear, starter sometimes clicks on first attempt, then catches on second.
On the other Sable I owned, the water pump was a problem that you would expect every 40,000 miles or so. Generally, a bad car with chronic coolant/oil related problems.
