Transmission trouble, a lot of leakage problems.
Motor mounts break a lot causing harm to the transmisson.
Wire fused out underneath the dashboard costing 300 bucks.
Very good and very sweet looking car. VERY VERY fast!!! A lot of people underestimate the Tempo and the Topaz and they have never driven one to know the power they really have.
Not reliable at all though. I dn't know if I would reccommend it. Performance is the best asset of this car.
I own a '92 Mercury Topaz GS. It has never had a problem with the engine or transmission. You must just have a lemon, every line of cars has at least one lemon in every product line. Even Cadillacs. Mine has logged 75,830 miles without a problem and I plan to keep it for years to come. Good luck with your XR5.
There is a lot of torque in the XR5. I drove my dad's 92 XR5, and they are quick and fast. People that don't know about the XR5 & GLS, have no clue. I got a GLS 9/5/03 and I will never get rid of it check it out http://members.cardomain.com/1fazgls_rawdawg.
I have a xr5 and its been the best car I have ever owned and the tork and power is crazy and I've never had a problem with it.
