"I waited 15 years to buy this car and love it, despite the problems"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Radiator hoses.

Break calipers.

Power locks.

Fuel injectors.

General comments?

Yes, the mileage is correct and origonal... I bought the car in mint condition for $3,300.00 last year... after about 6 months I took it to have the timing and other belts replaced and the shop mis-timed my XR... it has taken over a year to fix their screw up and still it does not run right... any helpful feedback would be great...

Back in '89 - '90 I worked at a dealership that sold them (new). I quickly fell in love with the xr4ti from the first drive. life always makes it rough for the little guy so I too waited. well, I finally bought my first one just the other day. an '89 silver xr4ti which of course requires a little attention, but I don't care. the turbo still has the kick that sold me in the first place. so, I am in total agreement with waiting and antisapating. (tweeked) hehe, that's my insides right now. happy driving folks :-)

A few things to help with that timing problem.

10*BTC for the Auto's

13*BTC for Manuals.

Also, check the 02 sensor since the bad timing might have fouled the O2 sensor and clogged the cat.

Worth a look.

I just got mine and it had a lot of prblems like the head was cracked head gasket was blown stuff like that, but the thing that killed me is the 2 fuel pumps its go two chack those they tend to kill an engines performance if not that check ur turbos lines because they use rare water and oil cooled turbos.

Your car could use a good tune up. Instead of telling the local autoparts store it's a Merkur, have them look it up as an 86 thunderbird turbo-coupe. Anyone who can do a timing belt and head on a 2.3l Ford Ranger can do your Merkur. At least they should be able to seeing as it's the same engine. First off, base timing for the vehicle is 10 degrees, 13 degrees is a juiced setting for cars that have been sorted out and have no engine quirks. The common problem with timing is the Pill "small plug located near distributor harness, has one yellow wire" the car cannot be timed unless that has been unplugged. unplugging it removes the computers ability to goof with timing during the initial setting. Look for parts from places such as rapido and BAT when stuff goes south. Another thing, your turbo is not rare at all, simply a second gen Air Research T3. Quite common and popular on Grand National Buick's and All 84-87 Turbo Fords and 85-89 Merkurs. They can be found on many a honda running 11's at the strip. They are sought after by dodge freaks for the Super 60 conversions on daytonas, omni glh, and spirit. When in doubt, search out the turbo ford websites. Many Merkur owners have allied with the turbo yanks with great benefit. Happy Motoring!
