"A Fun Toy and Occasional Commuter"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

-The valves had to be adjusted a couple of times, no big deal as these cars are very easy to work on.

-I remember the carbs being a little troublesome.

-The fuel gauge did not work, and I mean it really DID NOT work. It read empty all the time.

-We did not have very many electrical problems that I can remember. In fact, ours was probably the only Midget whose lights ALL worked properly!

General comments?

This car was so much fun. We never really had any big problems with it, though we were constantly tinkering. The tinkering was no big deal though, we're just perfectionists.

The biggest thing to remember with this car was to always put gas in it because we had to go by the odometer, which worked quite well actually, to know when we were low.

A more pure sports car was never built. The microscopic size meant excellent handling. The trunk was quite large for a convertible of any size and the rear shelf could accomodate plenty of junk even with the top down, unlike our larger MGB, where the top invaded the entire rear shelf when down.

This car was very reliable and we owned it for quite a while. Once, the car had been sitting for almost two months in storage and I went to show it to one of my friends who was very impressed when it started on the first try after sitting for such a long time.

Cosmetics were never the strong point of our Midget, but there was no rust and the car was mechanically sound. The convertible top was in good order and seemed to be a better design than that of the MGB as it was easier to work and did not leak nearly as badly.

I drove my midget as a daily driver 250 miles a week in the early 80's. The fuel gauge never worked while I owned it. Starting problems were traced to a bad ground on the starter solenoid. The only real issue I had was if I hit a big puddle, the distributor would get wet and I would have to dry it out before the engine would run. Other than the that this car was as reliable as the Hondas I owned and a lot more fun.

For two people under 5'7" the car was roomy enough but the foot wells had a tendency to get a little warm. The space behind the seats could hold 4 to 5 grocery bags and was a favorite spot for our dog.

We sold the Midget when we had our first child.
