1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS review from North America
"Will last a long time"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
The only MAJOR things that have gone wrong with this vehicle since I purchased it in Jan. 1999 are:
Distributor went out (July 1999)
transmission went out (Sept. 2002)
To replace the distributor with a brand new one cost me around $800 because I took it to a Mitsubishi dealer. As for the transmission I had a completely remanufactured automatic put in the car and was warrantied for 1 year by Eagle transmission. This cost me around $1300.
Yes the transmission is pretty pricey however when I compared the cost of $1300 vs. $20k for a new car, the choice was simple for me.
General comments?
In summary, this car has been pretty good to me and I have a feeling it will do the same for any other owner provided you are good it. I just use my car for general transportation to/from work, that's about it.
I change the oil at 3000 miles religiously not because it really needs it - it could probably last 4000 or so, but I do it because it has high mileage. I always use Pennzoil 10W-40 and put in a half-quart of STP 4 cylinder synthetic additive.
Every two oil changes I also put in RxP which is a fuel injector cleaner and is the best one I've used yet - better than anything STP has. Not only does it really clean everything out, but it also improves your emissions for those of us who have annual state inspections.
I've also replaced the following:
water pump (used AC Delco brand)
all belts (used Gates brand)
valve lifters (used Sealed Power brand)
brake pads (I like EBC - do NOT use anything from Autozone)
oxygen sensor (AC Delco brand)
all filters, oil, transmission and fuel (Fram brand)
I also use the Prestone orange antifreeze that has done well - never given me any trouble. And I know some people do not like Fram filters. Well I have never once had a problem with Fram and if you change them when you're supposed to they won't give anything to worry about.
Bottom line is this car will treat you well if you treat it well. Keep it maintained like you should and it should last you a couple hundred thousand miles at least.
