1995 Mitsubishi FTO GR review from UK and Ireland
"Fast, gorgeous, reliable, expensive to run"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Alternator failed. Mitsi wanted £750 for a new one, but I got a local auto-electrician to refurb for £100.
Other than that it's been typically reliable for a Japanese car.
General comments?
I love this car. It looks great and goes real well.
There are two main models; the GPX with 200bhp and the GR with 180bhp. Mine is the GR, with tiptronic gearbox, and performance is excellent - changes down really quickly and makes a fabulous noise.
A word about dealers; Mitsubishi dealers still seem to think that gray imports are a dirty word. I've been quoted £750 for an alternator and £800 for an exhaust.
I bought mine from a specialist importer in Edinburgh and they are almost as bad as the main dealers...
A definite recommendation is that you find an independent who understands and enjoys these cars. I take mine on a very long trip every couple of months to The Garage in Wishaw and get excellent service.
All in all, a fast, gorgeous, reliable car; just make sure you can afford the upkeep!
