1997 Mitsubishi Galant ES review from North America
"Since this is a popular car, I was expecting it to be more reliable"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
The radio is not working.
It was leaking antifreeze.
It's leaking transmission fluid, but I think it's just a seal, but I don't know which one.
The engine rattles in idle which is probably why the check engine light is also on.
General comments?
It rides nice and smooth, but there are a lot of glitches.
The pickup on this car sucks. It's hard to keep up with traffic with an underpowered car. If you want to take the car past 75mph, this 2.4 L engine has to rev at 3500rpm. My Toyota Celica that had a 2.2 L engine only had to do 2800rpm at 75mph. The engine is also very noisy; it was hard to listen to the radio when it worked, but since it does not work anymore, I just get to listen to the loud engine.
Not to far after I got the car, it started leaking antifreeze, and then shortly after it started leaking transmission fluid.
A mechanic fixed the antifreeze issue, but I forgot what the part he replaced was called. And replaced the transmission filter and gasket on the transmission issue, but it still has a slow leak.
The engine has been acting really weird lately. It's very hard to start, and when it finally starts, the engine makes a clicking noise, which I continue to hear while I'm driving. It also rattles, but only when it's in idle, and the check engine light stays on. I wonder what this problem could be.
The brakes suck, and it's not that they are worn, because I just had them checked not too long ago; it's just the way the brakes were designed.
The radio does not work anymore, which does not really matter because I rarely listened to it when it worked. At least I have cup holders because I'm a big beverage drinker.
What I like about the car is that it handles well on dry roads and in the snow. However, I live in Louisville Kentucky so it does not snow here that much.
It's not so bad on gas; I get about 21 in town and around 28 on highways. It has excellent visibility and the inside is roomy. It's a good looking car, but it does not run as good as it looks. I liked my Celica better, and I wish I still had it.
The reason I bought this car is because I saw a lot of them on the road, so I thought they'd be reliable and I did not bother to read other reviews until after I started having problems with it. Hopefully it will last me another year if I get lucky. I'm a college student and only working a part time summer job, so it's not like I have money to buy new car.
