1991 Mitsubishi Galant SE from Australia and New Zealand - Comments

"No regrets"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Alternator.

Computer.

Suspension (front and back)

Gearbox.

Steering rack is leaking fluid.

General comments?

A very reliable car for the first 250,000 kilometers of its life.

A reasonably quick car for its era and handles quite well, even when pushed to its limits.

A common fault with this model Gallant is when the alternator fails it 'can' surge the computer. A genuine Mitsubishi replacement computer will cost $1,700 Australian.

Hydraulic lifters are noisy when engine is first started however once the engine has had a chance to warm up, it's barely noticeable. The use of synthetic oils reduces the noise significantly.

With its current mileage, the car still does not blow smoke.

An economical car with reasonable performance, especially when premium unleaded fuel is used.

I have recently purchased a mitibushi gallant vrg motor car sedan 1800 c, year 2000 model.

The vehicle mileage was 25,000 km

on purchase the engine was very quiet and I was told to change the oil.

The next day I put in a 50 body oil and the hydraulic lifts started to make noise, I went to an auto shop and was told about the problem and they changed the oil to 5w/50 Castrol oil and it is still noisy, but not as before, is there any additive to put in the oil to reduce the noise in the engine.

Or do I have to replace the hydraulic lifters.
