Head gasket, 2nd turbo, cambelt, fanbelts, radiator, brake pads, discs, tyres, exhaust leak.
Transmission failed; was told by Kaspa Automatics that Mitsu trannys are the worst; there were 2 other Legnums getting new trannys.
Absolute crap, bought from a dealer, and only went good for 3 months, after that endless problems. These cars are fast, but boy do they empty your pockets.
In traffic don't expect less than 14.5l per 100km. Do some spirited driving and it creeps to 16l!
Lots of space, seats are OK, the dash is nice, until the lights failed.
I see quite a few on Auckland roads, and quite more sitting in garages looking to get repaired.
A mechanic's dream car, they will take so much money it's not funny. The car cost 11000, repair bill for 14000kms was $7698.98. We traded it in, and were offered only 3500. The dealer said despite only 105km on the clock, Mitsu's lose value extremely fast.
Got myself a Primera wagon; it's not fast, but it's been so reliable, and only cost 6g.
I'm sure no one will read this, but if you do buy a second hand car, ensure it has been well looked after. I have owned my VR4 for little under a year and it is by far the best car I have owned. It's ten years old with few mods and I'll eat M3s all day long...
Eat M3s huh? As long as the M3 is going in reverse I guess...
Haha, you gotta be a bit more specific mate. Beating an M3 with a Mitsi garbage... well not unless it's a toy one and ur kid is racing it against you!!
Sadly, it's true. My E46 M3 got dusted by my mate's 2000 Legnum VR-4 on 11psi. We did four runs of the quarter mile at the Drag Combat for charity event for cancer research.
Off the line, the Legnum blasts away hard.
Amazing for a wagon! And I'm not exactly a fan of the Japanese cars, either.
Being a close family friend, the flagsman drove my car against the Legnum VR-4 as well and the M3 was beaten by a car's length.
I took my friend VR-4 for a long drive to Newcastle on the weekend, seems very solid and hugs the road very well. Off a standing start is where this thing really shines. But the VR-4 seems to run out of puff after 6000rpm.
If he were to increase the boost to around 13-14psi, add an aftermarket full exhaust system, some down pipes, an intercooler and an ECU, then his estate would be a 911 Twin Turbo eater.
Mitsubishi isn't rubbish, build quality for the price is better than most others. I will admit the autos in Mitsubishis do have a bad name, but really, you aren't a "driver" if you drive an auto, you have no control even tho it's a tiptronic. And as for fuel consumption, what did you expect, it's turbocharged.
