Timing chain replaced twice.
Water pump replaced 3 times.
Engine ceased up as oil pickup was faulty, therefore a complete reconditioned engine was needed.
The automatic transmission was replaced two times.
Power steering pump failed once, power steering hose where it fits into the pump cracked four times in a matter of three months.
Front wheel alignment only lasts around 12 months.
Wears out new front tires like it's going out of fashion.
Return circuit fuses connected to battery on Elite model regularly misrepresents it's actual intentions and sends wrong message to computer, hence engine is immobilized and can't be started until these two circuits decide to actually communicate with each other, this could take 5 seconds or 5 hours. The problem has never been fixed as no mechanic had any idea as to how it should or could be fixed.
Right hand side drive shaft needs replacing on average every 40,000 Kilometers.
The alternator is also very unreliable or the circuitry that surrounds it could be faulty as according to the volt meter on the dash it rarely ever charges to it's intended capacity, this is most noticeable at night when light, heater and other electrical items are in use.
The throttle body also tends to be temperamental, it decides when and how much the engine idles at will, even though the timing and idle have been set to manufacturers specification after a service.
The roof-lining is of very poor quality and sags from the rear window all the way to the middle where the interior light is situated. I am told that this is a regular problem with all magnas of this type.
In all fairness to the Magna most of these problems only started to occur in the past 12 to 24 months when I decided to have the car serviced and repaired by a mechanic I had full trust in at the time.
For the first 10 years the Magna TP Elite was a terrific car, very quite, comfortable and fuel efficient to acceptable levels.
If the timing chain, water pump and certain electrical components were more reliable this car would be hard to beat as a family car.
10 years is not bad out of any car.
Only getting ten years out of a car is not good.
My Dad has had his HQ kingswood since 1976 and it keeps going.
My gradfathers VK commodore keeps going which I now own.
And any Japanese car except Mitsubishi will continue to work for ages.
1990 TP executive 226,000 km purchase price $1000.
Two weeks after purchase clutch blew, gear box spindle also found to be worn out, add 1 clutch kit + second hand gear box.
Car then developed mad bunny hoping / loss of power/ stalling, add 1 second hand throttle body.
Head developed a hole, add headgasket+ welded up head+ resurface/ pressure test.
Headgasket then blew after 3000km, add pressure test, resurface+ gasket headset.
Massive oil leak frommain oil seal.
1990 TP Elite, Owned it for 6 Months now and so far so good.
The CV Joints just started rattling, and there is a slight overheating problem that just occurred.
Very comfortable, fair on fuel, and drives A1. after 260,000k.
But the previous owner, had to replace the head twice.
My 1990 Tp Magna Elite I paid $400 for I just replaced the starter Motor In it rusted out due to be Full of water from Faulty Replacement Last time of the Last Owner, but all in all it Run's Fair and is a great First Car.
I have a TP Magna it's a great running car its the 2.6 carb motor it uses a little fuel I then had the air cleaner removed and put a piece of fly screen over the carbie it runs a little rich, but has way better performance I have also found sticking a high octane in the tank helps as well I also removed the end muffler it sounds deeper like a 6 I was wondering if anybody could tell me if I could get a body kit for the tp model as it a good fast front wheel drive.
Look for an elante in a junk yard. These were the sports model and featured a body kit as standard. Did you know that these were available with a 3 litre v 6 in new zealand. They are called the v3000 and are seriously quick.
My Father had a 1990 TP Magna for many years brought when it was 4 years old and it was a great car. It did have some this needed replacing, but this is all wear and tear and he never had it serviced in the whole time. He just bought about 2 bottles of cheap oil over the 6 years he had it because like all Magna's it had a small smoke blow on start up. He paid $17000 for it and it was a gem. Apart from the Modulator, Alternator Brushes, Battery Wiring and random radiator hoses needing replacing over the years. Also I used it as a courier vehicle for three months and it went very well. I have just bought a 1990 model with carby for $50 and it is a great car, heaps of power. With about $500 work it will be registed on going strong.
Hey 10 years is fantastic My 1990 Mitsubishi Magna Grand Tourer limited Edition (only 1000 made to represent mitsubishi's 10th year manurfacturing in Australia) and I paid $500 for it with it's original Motor with 498,000km and it has only had the head done once and general stuf like alternator service timing Chain and it keeps on powering on it now has 510,000km on it and still going Strong.
I have had the Magna 91 TR Model for about 1 year and all that I've replaced is 1 belt and a radiator hose. There has always been a loud timing chain noise but for the cost of rego to buy it I can't complain. Use a fair bit of fuel for a 4 cyl tho.
For the TR Magna you will need to keep an eye on those chains, they are good for 100,000 Km, but if they break you will be up for a new engine.
The best way to look after them is simple, replace your engine oil every 5000KM and not the 10000KM that others recommend to do. As if you listen for the rattle, as it will get louder after 4000KM since the last oil change, it's an old style engine with some new tweaks that’s all. They were not made like the engines in today’s new cars, which can go 10000KM before the oil needs changing.

Hi, anyone know about the Mitsubishi Magna car? I bought a 1994 model with 230 K odometer reading 2 years ago, but I am only driving 10 km in week, so I bought cheap car for 1100 dollars. But later found the car is blowing too much smoke with smell of oil and black or blue color smoke. At the time of buying, I did not notice that problem, but now I think I bought a lemon?
I did servicing, paying 165 to a local mechanic and he changed the oil filter and engine oil, and changed the alternator as battery sign was seen. But still the car is blowing smoke. Some have said it is a worn out machine and cost 3 k to fix.
I am asking anyone's suggestion, is there any solution to fix it?
