Gearbox synchromesh worn when I bought the car, replaced at 51,000 miles.
Poor performance at idle speeds during warm up, once warm the engine is superb.
This car really surprised me, every time I accelerate I cannot believe that it has only got a 1600cc engine. My previous car was a Toyota MR2 Turbo and would struggle to keep up with this road legal rocket.
The engine is glorious, I keep the synthetic oil fresh because I love to hear the howl of 8,500 RPM through the non cat exhaust and Piper-cross filter.
The handling is very good with the KYB lowered suspension, front and rear strut braces and 17 inch alloy wheels I have fitted.
The interior is not very good, very plain and plastic, but that's not what the car is about, it was built for speed, hence no soundproofing!
Well written review, may I just ask a quick question please?
I am after buying a mirage cyborg-R (colt) and I am wondering who you are insured with.
Thanks A lot.
Alex.
My best insurance quotes were through www.randall-pace.co.uk and adrian flux! Contact me on sts89@hotmail.com for any further advice, I have a reasonable knowledge of the cars!
Hey Steven,
I know what you mean when you say you expected less out of the mirage. I am not saying this because I own a mirage, I say this because I own one on the video game Gran Turismo 2. I was originally going to buy a Daihatsu midget and make it go as fast as it can, but then I thought about a Mitsubishi eclipse. then I saw the mirage in the used cars and I recognized that it looks like the Japanese Honda civic. So I bought it. And out of my four cars- a Toyota supra (turbo) 1993, a 1967 Ford Mercury cougar, a 1995 Honda civic 3 door, and the mirage- it is the fastest by about 5 miles per hour (the mirage goes 163 mph). But that is only with 2 tune ups on the mirage compared to like 10 tune ups on my Honda civic, and the civic only goes 157 mph. I was shocked about that. I actually thought that the Ford Mercury cougar would go the fastest, seeing that American car designers made cars with big engines way back when. Every single car that I own goes faster than it. Now I am seriously thinking of going to a Mitsubishi used car dealer (in Florida) and buying a Mirage Cyborg, get it painted red with a white stripe down the middle, putting some shiny rims on it, and installing a nice sound system. I know it will cost about $25-30,000, but I think (and I think you will agree) that it would be worth it.
Signed,
a sincere car enthusiast from the US of A.

I noticed in your review that you previously owned a Mr2 turbo. I own a 1990 Mr2 turbo running a stock boost of 11.1 psi with peak output of 225 hp. Your turbo must have been shot in the mr2 to compare it with a cyborg. I doubt it would have a sub 6-second 0-100km time similar to the Mr2.
The mirage cyborg is a very competitive rally car, I run one in the scottish tarmac championship and it does very well its fully prepared and untouchable by most 1600 cars champ results can be veiwed at www.stmc.co.uk the only one we have entered was the palmerson knockhill stages we came 38th out of 83 cars and most of them are 2000 turbos!!!
The 1990 MR2 GT Turbo only had 205 BHP if running as standard, I had a 225 BHP late 1991 GTS model with an induction kit fitted.
The Cyborg was slower than the MR2, most noticably over 110 mph, but there was not much in it at all!
Sounded like a TVR at high revs too!

If you think that your Mirage MIVEC goes like stink, then you should try it with a Mitsubishi Galant VR4 engine. I own a Proton Satria (basically a rebadged Mirage) and transplanted a 2000cc 4G63 Turbo engine from the Galant VR4. And it goes like mad. It’s making about 250hp at 1bar boost.
But I have to agree that it is basically a good car and highly reliable. It also handles well once you get the suspension sorted and slap on some good rubber.
I really love this car. I bought the Colt Cyborg R last week. In Thailand, it was prize at 7432$ used. My brother has a Toyota Celica GT-FOUR. I would like to try to modify the Colt and race him. I hope I'm going to win.
This car is the best at 1600cc because it has very short gear box and quick gear shifts! And that's why it betas Honda Civic Vitec.

I have a Cyborg R Mirage that I just bought from a guy that did take care of the car.
I raced a Honda GSR 1800cc against my car. My shocks, tires and clutch were bad, and that didn't stop me from seeing what the car doing.
The conditions were wet, the first run I got beat because I moved the car too hard and got 6 car length.
The second run I got beat because my lights were off, so when I came to a dark spot I couldn't see anything,so I slowed down the car.
When I realized the light were off, I turned them on, and then I accelerated from there; I still got beat by 2 car length, but if I didn't make that mistake, the Honda would have lost.
I called out the guy again, but he wouldn't run again. He told me that for a 1600 it is quick. He said that he could not believe that the car gave him so much trouble to catch. What I am saying is that if I didn't make those mistakes, he would have lost.
I own a 93 Mitsibishi Cyborg r and have recently had quite a bit of maintenance work done ie cambelt, engine mound repaired, oil and filter change and air filter replaced. I have heard the cyborgs have a tempermental idle... Ever since the work has been done I have had a putty exhaust, sounds like its missing... had it checked out by 3 mechanics and they can't seem to find the problem... timing belts are all correct and theres no visible problems with the engine, can anybody help?
I'd try resetting the ECU by disconnecting the battery for 30mins and then reconnecting it.
Not a guarantee, but has fixed a lot of mysterious problems on many of the motors I've owned. I hope this helps.
