1989 Nissan 240SX SE from North America - Comments

"A very hot little sports car"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

The transmission went out at 56,000 miles, but the previous owner (my mom) had apparently never added new fluid to it!

Cooling system went haywire last year,

due to a few cracked radiator

hoses, but luckily no permanent

damage to the engine.

A few rust spots on the body, especially around the sunroof.

Brake lights occasionally short-out.

Crappy radio (original), replaced it

with a high-quality Alpine CD player.

General comments?

Awesome handling.

Very cool Heads Up Display (HUD) on the

windshield. Digital speedometer looks

high-tech for an 89 model.

Very quick little devil, don't let the 4-cylinder 2.4L fool you.

No major mechanical failures. The car

just needs basic maintenance and some TLC, and it'll get you there and back, no problem.

My 240 has been babied its entire life,

evident from the mere 64,000 miles. I intend to keep this car for a very long

time, adding performance enhancements

and accessories along the way.

I think this is a very good comment. I have the same car and the same problems. The sun roof has little rust and I have problems with the tail lights. The handling is great. I't has a cool air intake, performance exhaust, and soon a speed chip. It is a quick 4 cylinder.

I have the same car as well along with all the problems stated, but my hud and speedometer stop working when it gets cold. I would think this is due to some loose connections, but I heard a bad capacitor may be the problem. If anyone knows what the problem could be or how to fix it please let me know at marcingoman@hotmail.com thanks.

I bought a 1989 Nissan 240sx Xe brand new in January of 1989. Had it until 2001. Best car I ever had. My clutch didn't go until 221,000 miles. I never even had to replace the starter, alternator, or the radiator. My radio did go after maybe 6 yrs. At around 240,000 my fan fell off, but it still drove fine for another 11,000 miles and then I donated it to charity.

My maintenance schedule was, I changed the oil every 3,000 miles. Every 2 years flush the coolant. Change the gear oil and spark plugs every 30,000-40,000 miles.

I currently inherited a 1989 240sx, question I've noticed that the car is sputtering at idle and it seems to bog in first and second gear. Q: I've changed all the filters, removed the old gas from the tank and put premium along with octane booster. Q: Should I proceed to put new spark plugs and what brand do you preferr. Also the car passed California smog inspection. Help in Northern California.

My main purpose to keep the car would be a commuter.

Thanks.
