The interior of the car is not that good looking. The seats are comfortable, but look like junk.
The headlights would look much better if they were not flip-up.
It is almost impossible to seat in the back seat due to no foot space.
The CD Player was a good idea in 1991 but they totally forgot to add premium sound because the stock sound system is crappy.
The super hicas kicks ass. The 4 wheels steering is very noticeable at speeds higher than 20mph and very helpful.
The car would be nothing with out the ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) and most of all LSD (Limited Slip Differential).
I was surprised the car even had a CD Player (back in 1991!). It sounds like crap, but it plays Cd's.
***MOTOR:
the KA24DE is the reason why the car got its high reputation in Drifting History.
5-speed manual: Rear Wheel Drive
2.4Liters
16 Valve
4-cylinder
Twin Cam (DOHC - Double Over Head Cam)
155HP @ 5,500 RPM.
This is a very strong motor from Nissan. Probably the best of its kind.
But it does not matter. I went with SR20DE-T motor straight from Japan. I replaced the stock motor with 2.0L Turbo which is known as SR20DE-T. Very pleased with the result.
The body kit and 17 inch rims really improve the car outside appearance.
Good luck drifting =)
I own a 1991 Nissan 240SX Super hicas. I have no bad things to say about the hicas. My car came with a CD player also, and to this day it still plays my CD's and even ones that I make from my computer. I am thinking about putting a car kit on it, but I have not decided yet, any suggestions?
The 240 never had the ka24 in it in japan. It had a turbocharged 205hp sr20det in it. That's the engine that got everyone modifying the 240 in japan, not the crappy frontier engine.
Probably the best looking car of it's year.
Car pulls hard up to 5500 RPM and that's where it falls flat on it's face, but you want torque to be in the low end anyway.
Interior is pretty decent, LSD is the reason I bought this model. Car handles like a DREAM making up for the lack of power, will stick to the road like glue, but will slide controllably all day if you want it to.
I have a 1991 not running because I am doing a swap, but how do I tell if it has the stock lsd.
So are the 4 wheel steering and lsd the only differences? I guess 5 extra hp too? I was looking at one to buy over a stock 240.
This is to everybody that does a sr20 swap. The ka24de is a better motor by far. With five pounds of boost it has more horse power than the sr20 stock and the torque is a whole lot better. So it by far is better than the sr20... but besides that stop wasting money and put the rb26 or rb25. They are the top of the nissan world...
The 240sx is super. Especially the Super Hicas models. Four wheel steering plus the LSD. It's a dream come true.
I own a red 91 240sx. (It was a gift.) It has 134k miles 7k of which I had the fun of adding to the odometer on twisty rural roads. Only issue so far is the odometer flops around as if there's a loose connection to one of the tires. It's a fun car to drive. Be careful to allow the seat belt connector to automatically adjust before exiting or you could hit your head on it as it passes by! No problems with the engine - it purrs quietly even at higher speeds and heavy throttle. It has stock 155hp 2.4 and probably never been rev'd past 4k (until recently). It's a sporty car so there's quite a bit of road noise and of course the seats are very low - practically on the floor - so a larger person would have difficulty getting in & out of it. This car if definately for those who like to have fun driving. It probably gets about 22mpg on average.
This is to the guy that said that the SR is a crappy motor.
You sir, obviously do not know what you are talking about. SR's are great motors and the best motor for the your money. YES a boosted KA will make more power then an SR, but once you go over 8-10LBS of boost the motor will not be reliable at all. Then you have to spend all your money rebuilding it to lower compression when you can pour that money into an SR with basic bolt ons and get anywhere between 250WHP to 300+ and that IS on stock turbo. The SR20 is a great motor. Why do you think they used it in japan for over 10 years? A well built KA is a good motor too, but you have to build it for it to be reliable. Not trying to rag on you, but I didn't want these people to be misled.
As far as 240's go they are great cars. Amazingly balanced and sporty out of the box. A little under-steer biased, but that is easily fixed with some bolt on suspension parts. The super-hicas makes for an entertaining car. If you are out to drift then you do not want the car for that, but for the LSD. You can get a hicas bar to get rid of it if you are drifting. I have owned over 10 240s and will always own them. If you have any questions you can email me at turbomant34@netscape.net or sign up on my board 240atlanta.com.
They 240 never came with the sr20 in Japan anyways... hence why there it is called a 180sx because it has a ca18det. I believe it's called 1.8l turbo, the sr20det is from an S14 Silvia.
What we know as the 240sx in the united states in Japan was known as a Silvia and 180sx. The Silvia (Coupe) was availible with the SR20DET engine and the SR20DE engine. The 180sx (Fastback) was availible with the CA18DET, SR20DE, and the famous SR20DET.
I am a proud owner of the 240sx. I have a 1991 240sx (Fastback) with SuperHICAS. The car is beautiful, fun, and very powerful. I originally chose to go with the SR20DET engine but am now upgrading to the RB25DET. The RB motor is more reliable (being it has an iron block) and easier to make more horsepower and torque due to its larger displacement. I also do recommend the HICAS eliminator kit if your car has HICAS because it really messes with the way the car performs. It's pretty scary in the rain and anytime you have low traction. All wheel steering on FWD, cool, AWS on AWD fun! AWS on RWD YIKES!
I bought a 1991 240sx Super Hicas, it doesn't look the best, but it is my baby! haha.
But the only thing I need a lot of help on is the front, rear bumpers and side skirt's that are on my car... They are made in Austria by a company named "FOHO". I can't find anything on them, can anybody help me? It is driving me crazy! I have never seen any of my body part's anywhere! It is really cool, but frustrating because I don't know what they are, please somebody help me. If you can find, ANYTHING about it, please email me. Zack

Thank you!
I have a 91 240 SX hatchback, and it has a ton of room in the front seat. 6'7" people drive my car with ease, and they're easy to get horse power up to 200hp if you just modify the stock exhaust by cutting out the resonator and just putting a good tip on it with just a little bit of back pressure. This car won't die; it has 170,000 miles and runs great.
I have had a 240sx super hicas for almost a year, the problems are I didn't know what I was buying. It came from a couple of Kentucky farmboys who absolutely killed it. They tried to pry the timing chain cover off with taking the oil pan off and the engine out. It had a high pressure oil leak, about a drop a second. They put the cams and the chain in the way they "think" it looked when they took it out I guess. Engine got so thrown out of time that all 4 pistons have fresh silver eyebrows from where they tagged the intake valves.
I still think the ka24de motor is a great motor for the 240sx. I'll admit the sr20det is a good motor, but I have to say the ka24de is better because there is no replacement for displacement. The sr20 is just a 2 liter; too small of an engine if you want a car with balls.
I've disconnected my super hicas; it's a waste with only a 2 degree change. I've heard about a set of 2 bars, each one connecting the joint in the suspension to the LSD housing, any idea where I can get these. I'm sure the one piece bar is great for racing, but for street driving/racing, it would tag every damn bump in the road.
