1991 Nissan 300ZX review from North America
"The best "Z" ever made."
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Alternator died.
Power Transistor Unit failed (common problem).
Exhaust system fully replaced.
Some wear on drivers seat (expected with leather seats).
A few rust spots, nothing major.
General comments?
The 300ZX is a true driver's car. It becomes almost an extension of your will on the road. I've never driven a car that responds so easily to your every whim.
My first car was a Nissan 240SX (which I loved), but the 300ZX was my dream car from the moment I first saw one in the parking lot of a nearby mall in 1993. When I bought this car, I was ecstatic.
I does have some flaws- some electrical quirks. The Power Transistor Unit is a common problem in the 91-96 Z, and I think it was a recall. Check on that before you buy one and you should be fine.
It was the Hawaiian salty sea air that rusted out my exhaust system and put some rust on the body, and that couldn't be helped.
Mechanically, though, this car is a Herculean feat of engineering. The engine runs like a champ, and it amazes me that a 12 year old car can still roar to life at the first flick of the ignition switch. It has almost unlimited passing power on the freeway and it accelerates like a rocket off the stoplights.
Last, but not least, the looks of the car turns heads to this day. I can't count the number of "Nice car!" and "Sweet ride, man!" and buying offers I've received since I've been driving this car. Not to mention the fact that buying a Z puts you in a sort of Z brotherhood. I got honks and waves from fellow Z owner's all the time, and it's good Z etiquette to return the favor.
Truly a one of a kind car. Even when you include the new 350Z, the 300ZX was the pinnacle of Z car design. Unsurpassed in looks, relative performance, and just plain coolness, the 91-96 300ZX is a best buy.
