1999 Nissan Frontier SE Off Road 4X4 review from North America

This truck has needed only two repairs since I bought it used 18 months ago.

At approximately 28,000 miles, the air conditioning compressor failed. The truck continued to run without it, so I was not stranded when it failed. The repair was very expensive at nearly $900.

At approximately 48,000 miles the fuel pump failed, and the contact plate in the gas tank wall where the electronic wires go through melted. The mechanic had never seen this happen before, and he was certified Nissan mechanic who had worked on them for many, many years.

The fuel pump failed when I was over 100 miles from home, so the break-down created a difficult situation. That is, I had to find a tow truck, a suitable mechanic, a ride back home, etc. There was also a big delay in getting the contact plate. I was without the truck for an entire week. The repair cost approximately $800.

The only other complaint that I have is that the paint is starting to turn chalky. For a vehicle that is only 5 years old, this is unacceptable.

Other than that, the truck has needed no repairs in the 18 months that I've owned it. I plan to keep it for several years. If nothing else goes wrong with it during that time, I will be satisfied that it is reliable.

If one more big repair is needed like the two described above, I will sell it. I would probably look for a Toyota to replace it under those circumstances.

Overall, I like this truck. I got a fantastic deal on it when I purchased it. It is black with alloy wheels, but otherwise plain without looking cheap or stripped down.
