"A reliable and practical suv"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Nothing much. Car is reliable for the most part.

General comments?

The Pathfinder is a pretty solid SUV with lots of structural integrity and stolid reliability. Performance wise, the car is mediocre. The engine is rated at 153hp which is not very powerful considering the Pathfinder isn't a very light automobile. The transmission is OK, but sometimes it takes a while for it to downshift when it needs more power and by the same token takes long to upshift when the gear is about to fry. The kickdowns are very jarring, especially uphill. My only other complaint is that the Pathfinder is not asthetically appealling. I would rather drive a lux-sports sedan such as an Audi A4 or Lexus IS300, because they suit my driving style a lot better than the Pathfinder or any other SUV. But the Pathfinder does take a lot because it has to put up with my driving and I do drive it hard.

The reviewer above is probably more interested in his image than a well-performing vehicle. If you're looking for a really well-build solid vehicle, the Pathfinder is incredible. As long as you change the oil regularly, the engine is virtually bulletproof. I've had mine for 4 years now, and have had no problems with it whatsoever. Not a single engine problem, no interior problems, nothing. And I am not known for being very good at preventative maintenance. So for me, the Pathfinder is ideal: it won't quit and hasn't cost me a thing in repairs.

I have a 1995 Nissan Pathfinder which I bought with 25000 miles. I bought it in 1998 and all I've done was change the battery, change the oil, and the alternator belt. As far as the engine, the pathfinder is impressive on every end. Its got 118000 miles now and I'm not the only driver. In fact it has 3 drivers. Never have I had a problem with its reliability. Yes, it may be a bit sluggish with its acceleration, but that is made up for with its long lasting reliability and craftsmanship.

I own a 1991 Nissan Pathfinder. As the second owner (3yrs) I have put approximately 60,000 miles on it myself. I have driven it from coast to coast and it has never left me stranded (driving through South Dakota this past July I averaged 90 mph). The vehicle currently has 235,000 miles on it. The repairs I have had to make are simply parts that have worn out, no car is going to go that far without having to have an occasional part replaced. To anyone thinking about purchasing a Pathfinder I would ensure that the owner/dealer, whoever, has documentation showing when the timing chain was last replaced. In the Pathfinder engine if the timing chain breaks you can count on buying a new engine. When you start the engine and the lights on the dash come on make sure the ABS Brake light comes on. The computer that controls the braking system can go bad and due to the cost of replacing it most people just disconnect it. The brakes still work fine, but the ABS System won't work. I have found mine to be an extremely solid vehicle and am very happy with it. For those who want something to personalize, there are plenty of web sites that sell after market parts for this vehicle. My only complaint is that it is very difficult if not impossible to upgrade the engine in order to pull more power from it. But if you just want a good all around SUV that is reliable and fun to drive the Pathfinder is an outstanding choice.
