"A+ dependable little truck"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

At about 50K miles the check engine light came on. The fault was a bad throttle position sensor. It cost $140 part and labor to have repaired at a Nissan dealership. No other problems at all.

Other than routine service, oil changes etc. and fuel, it has cost me 140 dollars to drive this truck 113 thousand miles.

General comments?

I have never had a more dependable vehicle than my Nissan. They built an awesome product that is built to last.

I have nothing but good things to say about this vehicle. It has never let me down or left me stranded. This truck cost 12K new and was definitely worth every cent.

I have a 1997 Nissan Pickup truck with 60,000 miles. I like the truck, but it has one problem that I can't figure out. Every time I start it up after it sits for a while there is a rattle under the hood that lasts for about 2 or 3 seconds. Have you ever heard of this, and do you know how to fix it. please email me at Heste001@tcc.fl.edu.

Thanks, Tim.

I have a 2002 model Navara with 12,000 miles, I too get a rattle from the top end on start up. This only happens when it has been stood for more than twelve hours. It sounds to me like oil starvation for the first few seconds. I have had the first two services done at my local Nissan agent. I note they use Shell synthetic oil. Could this be the problem? The dealership are unable to detect a problem, but I suspect my three year warranty will come in handy soon. Has any one had a similar problem on these late 2.5 engines? noiseynissan@roncobb.com.

I have the exact same problem with the rattle as everyone else. I have a 97 4wd with 72,000 miles. After some research, I found out that the rattle is from the timing chain. The factory tensioner is made of plastic and it ability to hold enough tension to prevent the rattle fades quick. Other than the annoying start-up noise, the rattle is harmless, it's not gonna jump timing or break the chain or anything like that. If you ever tear your engine down and want to eliminate the noise, they make an aftermarket tensioner that is metal and I have read that makes a huge difference.

My 1997 Nissan 2WD has been a great truck with 110k miles. but has the same start-up rattle. Others mention this and refer to timing chain tensioner. Are they referring to the 4 or 6 cylinder, or both? Thanks for this site.

I have a 1996 Nissan Pickup. Same problem with the rattling. I found when I tighten belts the rattling goes away. My assumption is bad bearings somewhere along the belt system, but have not done a complete analysis of the problem.

Is the sound that everyone has mentioned heard while driving as well as start-up? Mine is pretty loud, especially when A/C kicks on.

I have a 97 Nissan XE 4x4 with 90,000 miles. I LOVE THIS NISSAN. Honestly have never had a problem one, other than the regular repairs through the years. I live in the snow and this truck, by far, has handled the snow better than anything else I've seen. And Yes... I have the same rattle at start up...I've had it since the first time I started the truck. I'm hoping to drive it to 300,000 miles! Love It!

I have a 1997 Nissan Frontier Pickup truck, I have never had any real problems from it. It has 65,000 miles on it. I had the oil changed and someone broke the splash guard underneath and when the roads got flooded it shorted out some my sparks plugs and condenser and I had to have that replace. The damper in the steering wheel broke and it caused the horn to start going off all the time, but the people at Nissan removed it and said I didn't need it anyway and it worked fine afterwords. Plus it doesn't get stuck in the sand like all the big trucks. I take it to the beach all the time. I love my truck. It has a big problem now though a big semi-truck crushed it. Now I'm afraid I'm going to lose it because the damage it more than the bluebook, this is not right! Nissan trucks are great and their bluebook value such not be as low as they are! : (

I own a 1997 Nissan pickup it is or was a great little truck. recently it over heated and blew the head gasket.

When I had the head checked it was cracked and needed to be replaced. that's when I started to encounter problems.

It would seem that nissan only made the 12 valve 2400 cc engine for two years 1996 and 1997 and rebuilt parts for it are hard to find. I could not find a head for it and decided to buy a low mile used engine I found at a wrecking yard. wrecking yards don't seem to know this, but

as it turns out the 1996 engine is substantially different than the 1997 engine the distributor, fuel injection rail and various sensors won't work unless changed. and the distributor won't fit at all unless you remove the head and timing cover and exchange the timing cover. when I purchased the correct distributor it would not plug into the 1997 trucks wiring harness. it cost me a bunch of money for parts. that I could not use. my advice for potential Nissan buyers is try to get a different year of truck or be very carefull when buying parts for this truck.

Hi I own a honda and I get that rattle noise that most of you get on your truck, but I took my car to a mechanic and I had him lift it and that rattle noise came from the Catalic Converter HEAT SHIELD it was hitting against the converter, but only for like 3-5 seconds after starting the car for the first time on the day.

I have a 97 Nissan XE pickup that I hate it has 47,000 miles on it and has a vibration after 3200 rpm. It also has really junky quarter window locks made of cheap plastic that have fallen apart and are over 40.00 to repair. I would sell it in a minute if I could get my money back.

I have a 1997 nissan pickup with 90,000 miles on it with the same rattle noise its been doing it for two years. A mechanic told me it was the timing chain also. It's a awesome truck, but I would buy a V6 if I had another choice.
