1987 Oldsmobile 98 Brougham review from North America

"I love it. I wish I had two"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

During my time of ownership, and based upon the previous owner's history, nothing major outside of "expected" service or maintenance has failed with this vehicle.

General comments?

This car has a very comfortable interior, with very soft fabric that is easy to clean.

The cabin is designed in a style very similar to the 1970's. Design elements that enforce "cab forward engineering" and "ergonomics" have not been introduced.

While certain controls may not be within reasonable reach, the (now obsolete) design affords a feeling of more interior space. In the event of repair, replacement, or upgrades; access points (screws, clips, etc..) are easy to identify visually.

This car provides a very snappy and comfortable ride. While it may not be geared for those looking to "race" a vehicle, the pickup is very strong and the passenger would have no problems writing in a book, drinking a cup of coffee, or performing any task that would be rendered difficult due to a stiff or bouncy suspension.

More importantly, all "serviceable components" of this vehicle are easy to access. A patient individual with little or no mechanical experience could easily service this vehicle or make repairs with the assistance of a reputable service manual and basic tools.

The above does not apply to later years for a variety of reasons.

Most importantly, service this vehicle as if it were from the late 1960's. While it was modern twenty years ago, tune-ups should include a new "coil pack" (which replaced distributor caps), fuel filter, and spark plugs. Many symptoms that appear with these vehicles are resolved by replacing serviceable components which cost lest than $20.00 and require less than twenty minutes to perform.

If you are not "mechanically inclined", it is wise to know that "fuel injection" does not imply that a vehicle will automatically repair it's spark plugs, wires, coolant systems, etc.
