1999 Oldsmobile Alero GL review from North America
"Not a car you should purchase unless you have money to throw away"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
34,000 miles- Manifold valve went bad, mixing antifreeze with the oil, ruining the engine.
36,000-38,000 miles- frequently wouldn't start or even turn over because the key reader wouldn't read the key due to repetitive, minute dirt on the key which fouled the reader.
38,000 miles- Starter bolt came off breaking the starter which wasn't actually evident until after the alternator needed replaced, which ruined the battery and the car still wouldn't start at times, it took over two weeks of occasionally not starting before it was a consistant problem the mechanic could find.
38,000 miles- after replacing the battery, the was an acrid smoke odor once in a while, then the power steering went out in the car.
Prior to the motor replacement it got 25 mpg, now it gets 17 mpg.
General comments?
I loved it when I first got it. The seats were very comfortable (driver seat it auto-adjustable) and I have fibromyalgia and have difficulty finding comfortable seating.
Thankfully I purchased a independent warranty on the vehicle costing me $800 (6-yr,36,000 mile) with a $50 deductable per repair, otherwise I would have spent thousands of dollars to keep this car running and it doesn't even have 50,000 miles on it yet.

| If you can get past the problems, Alero has potential: MUCH better than the Achieva it replaced! |
